I was taking pictures of the waning crescent moon yesterday morning and going through them later I found I'd caught the trail of a satellite beginning to pass in front of the moon. #Moon #Satellite #Astronomy #StarGazing #CrescentMoon

$Photo: The picture is mostly sky with the flat roof of an apartment building just showing at the bottom of the picture along with the tops of a four trees. In the sky is a cloud that starts narrow at the bottom of the picture and gets wider a the top. The cloud is wispy and see through. At the lower third mark is a an almost straight white horizontal line that goes from one side of the cloud to the other. At one quarter along the length of the line from the left side is a very bright spot slightly bigger than the width of the line - this is the Sun Dog. A Sun Dog is caused by ice crystals in the cloud refracting the light of the Sun. The almost straight white line is also caused by this refraction.$

This type of fly is a relative newcomer to the west coast. It is a Yellow-haired Sun Fly (Myathropa Florea), or the Batman Hover Fly ( so called because of the "Batman" symbol on its thorax - though it looks to me more like a Jack-O-Lantern face - two rounded triangular spots for eyes and a gaping wide mouth - turn the mouth upside down and it vaguely resembles the Batman symbol)
They hail from Europe and North Africa and were first spotted on the west coast of North America in 2005.

Photo: Two male Wood Ducks, swimming side by side towards the left side of the picture, are being followed by a female Wood Duck, who has her beak open. The Male Wood are paddling at a good pace and have created a good bow wave in front of them and are churning the water behind them with their feet. The males are not quite parallel to each other, but have come almost together by their heads to form a V with their bodies.
The female duck, who is not fully in frame, her tail being out side, has her head jutting forward, but raised above the water.
