Opinion: If Canada joins the European Union show, it will only be from the upper balcony
It might be disappointing to some Canadians – or maybe a relief – but ‘associate membership’ to the EU doesn’t look like it would change much of anything

Now, beyond the hype: What does "associate membership" for Canada mean in practice? The legal status doesn't exist in the EU treaties. Not even Iceland and Norway, which are in the single market and have applied thousands of EU laws, have that status. So what now?

Kevin Milligan @kevinmilligan.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Well, I guess they chose the 'do tighter co-operation and tag that as Associate Membership' route. As I said a few days ago, that's likely fine. Closer co-operation with likeminded countries is great. My objections were to full EU membership, which is a beast of a different colour.

I think the public should *own* airports and set the terms for how they are operated. But I don't see the govt having any particular advantage in *operating* the shopping mall and logistics hub that is an airport. And if I had a hunch, I might expect the private sector would be pretty good at it.

This is really smart. The federal government is now allowing full capital expensing on 2/3rds of capital investments by businesses to incentivize investing back into companies, rather than sitting on dead money. www.canada.ca/en/dep...

Naming aside, this is a big deal and the right choice to inprove tax competitiveness. Expensing investment rewards investment directly. It is forward looking and productivity focused.
