Most of those are supply manged, which is a literal government sponsored and protected cartel designed to raise prices. Artificially increasing the price of milk and eggs then layering price controls on top because the price is too high is completely incoherent

The efficiency of a thermal generator is limited by the ratio of the absolute temperatures of the heat sink and source (Carnot's theorem). Data centres aren't that much hotter than the environment in absolute temperature so the efficiency is likely too low for cogeneration to be practical.

The modern civil service is huge and complex and the majority of ministers have no experience in managing it. The deputy minister does most of the actual management so it seems that the ministers have essentially abdicated responsibility for the ministry's mistakes.

I'm realizing that my original post is incorrect. There won't need to be a new bill to protect them from losing seats because they won't have more than 78 seats for a while unless they start growing faster than average. They will get more overrepresented by the 2022 bill over time though.
000 0
Kevin De Jong @kevindejong.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
My understanding is that previously the representation rule brought up their seats to 78, however because they've been growing below average the representation rule would have only allocated them 77 to keep them overrepresented. The bill ensured they kept the seat making them more overrepresented.

Kevin De Jong @kevindejong.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Unless I have misunderstood something, but I don't think Quebec was going to be underrepresented prior to the 2022 bill. If they were to have been underrepresented, the representation clause would have prevented them from losing the seat without the need to update the grandfather clause.

This is how we ended up with health care being a core issue debated in federal campaigns even though this is unambiguously provincial jurisdiction.
010 1
Kevin De Jong @kevindejong.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
The problem is that these transfers have successfully created programs that people like. Canada probably doesn't have universal health care without the health transfer, but paradoxically it encourages the provinces to neglect health care so they can extract further funding from the federal govt.
210 2
Kevin De Jong @kevindejong.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
The provinces know that the public doesn't understand jurisdiction and blame all issues on the federal govt. The federal govt can't fix the underlying issues so they set up funding schemes to signal to the public that they are doing something. Jurisdiction is now even hazier. It's a vicious cycle.

I'm less sympathetic to the equalization argument as it was part of the constitutional deal and Alberta was a recipient for years. I do think however that Canada's political system underrepresents Alberta and there is an element of truth to the "Laurentian elite" narrative.

Kevin De Jong @kevindejong.bsky.social · 24/05/2026
The PM appointing senators really defeats the purpose of the Senate representing regions, although electing the Senate would cause a whole new set of issues. What I have never understood is how Alberta went from advocating a triple-E Senate with Reform to Smith and UCP wanting to abolish it.
120 2
Kevin De Jong @kevindejong.bsky.social · 24/05/2026
They are kind of the same grievance because the extra seats are based on the senatorial clause which states that a province must have as many seats in the House of Commons as it has in the Senate.

I dunno, I feel like ultimately the goal should be to have zoning rules in place that don’t require “millions of little bylaw deviations” just to get housing built. www.thestar.com/news/gta/six...
Generally, he said, that authority is well placed. Council doesn’t have time to “referee” millions of little bylaw deviations in construction — it needs to focus on big-picture zoning policy.

If it weren’t for the committee, all council would have time for is minor variance requests, he said. And if decisions were left solely to planning staff, he said that would create a lack of transparency.

The tradeoff is that by delegating to the committee, council loses its say in these matters. It can’t overturn committee decisions.
