There's a new remake of Stephen King's Carrie on Amazon, and the blurb calls it a "classic coming-of-age story." That's exactly like calling what most companies do "Agile." Both of them are centered on bullying and end with rivers of blood, hundreds of deaths, and the whole town on fire. 😉

You have to accurately assess the problem to create proper solutions
Screenshot of article which reads: Partisan polarization is not the greatest threat to American democracy.
It is a vivid and identifiable symptom of the real threat. And it is a popu-
lar frame because it blames no one. But because political polarization is
a symptom, and not the root of the problem that ails us, “fixing” polar-
ization will not restore American democratic health.

Today I wrote about the Padres horeseshit Roberto Clemente Award nominee. Baseball has to do fucking better. www.cupofcoffeenews.com/cup-of-coffe...
I had missed this when I wrote my Clemente Award nominee post yesterday, but I really cannot believe that reliever Jason Adam is the Padres nominee. The same Jason Adam who along with several teammates refused to wear rainbow caps and sleeve logos on Pride Night while with the Tampa Bay Rays four years ago. And he didn't just refuse. He defaced his official uniform by tearing off the patches. His justification was his religion:

“A lot of it comes down to faith, to like a faith-based decision. So it’s a hard decision. Because ultimately we all said what we want is them to know that all are welcome and loved here. But when we put it on our bodies I think a lot of guys decided that it’s just a lifestyle that maybe — not that they look down on anybody or think differently — it’s just that maybe we don’t want to encourage it if we believe in Jesus, who’s encouraged us to live a lifestyle that would abstain from that behavior, just like [Jesus] encourages me as a heterosexual male to abstain from sex outside the confines of marriage. It’s no different.”
As most actual Christians and most people who have actually read and studied the Bible know, there isn't a single sentence in it where Jesus condemns gay people or, to use Adam's words, "encouraged us to live a lifestyle tat would abstain from that behavior." But go on with your bullshit justifications, bro.

As I said at the time that all went down, imagine if someone tore off the American flag patch on Veterans Day because their religion caused them to be opposed to warfare. Or if they tore off a sponsor patch that players wear on their uniform sleeves now because the company in question did things which were offensive to the players' deeply held values. I know exactly what would happen: the player would be roundly condemned and ostracized. They'd be front-page news for weeks or longer and they might very well see their career come to a premature end because people would be outraged. But that doesn't happen when one defaces their uniform on Pride Day. The guy who does that gets nominated for the game's most prestigious humanitarian award. A nomination, according to MLB's writeup, that is premised on his work with a charity which seeks to help "children in crisis." Which makes me wonder if Adam knows just how many gay kids are thrust into crisis because of the exact brand of bigotry and hated he himself has demonstrated in the most public fashion possible. And how much it means to them to see high-profile people like athletes and entertainers and other public figures acknowledge their basic humanity and accept them for who they are. That was too much to ask of the San Diego Padres Clemente Award nominee, however.

This is the second year in a row in which the Clemente Award nominee announcements were infused with anti-LGBTQ+ bigotry. Last year Jan Ramos-Eisen noticed that four-time Clemente Award nominee Liam Hendricks' bio was scrubbed of his charitable efforts made in support of the LGBTQ+ community. His 2022, 2023, and 2024 bios all noted that he was a "vocal supporter" or a "staunch ally" of the LGBTQ+ community, but there was no mention of it last year. It was not because Hendricks suddenly abandoned those efforts. It was almost certainly because MLB spent most of 2025 eliminating any and all reference to its diversity initiatives in order to curry favor with the Trump administration. Erasing Hendricks' outreach to the gay community was just part of that.

So good job, everyone. Congrats on turning this whole process into an opportunity to shit on LGBTQ+ persons. That's exactly why we celebrate Roberto Clemente's legacy. He was all about bigotry and excluding. He never thought about the most vulnerable people among us.

“It is very appalling and sometimes quite frightening to see how trans-exclusionary feminists have allied with rightwing attacks on gender” Today is exactly 5 years since @theguardian.com censored the words of non-binary academic, Judith Butler. These are the censored words. Still valid now.
It is very appalling and sometimes quite frightening to see how trans-exclusionary feminists have allied with rightwing attacks on gender. The anti-gender ideology movement is not opposing a specific account of gender, but seeking to eradicate "gender" as a concept or discourse, a field of study, an approach to social power. Sometimes they claim that "sex" alone has scientific standing, but other times they appeal to divine mandates for masculine domination and difference. They don't seem to mind contradicting themselves.
The Terfs (trans exclusionary radical feminists) and the so-called gender critical writers have also rejected the important work in feminist philosophy of science showing how culture and nature interact (such as Karen Barad, Donna Haraway, EM Hammonds or Anne Fausto-Sterling) in favor of a regressive and spurious form of biological essentialism. So they will not be part of the coalition that seeks to fight the anti-gender movement. The anti-gender ideology is one of the dominant strains of fascism in our times. So the Terfs will not be part of the contemporary struggle against fascism, one that requires a coalition guided by struggles against racism, nationalism, xenophobia and carceral violence, one that is mindful of the high rates of femicide throughout the world, which include high rates of attacks on trans and genderqueer people.
The anti-gender movement circulates a spectre of "gender" as a force of destruction, but they never actually read any works in gender studies. Quick and fearful conclusions take the place of considered judgments. Yes, some work on gender is difficult and not everyone can read it, so we have to do better in reaching a broader public. As important as it is, however, to make complex concepts available to a popular audience, it is equally important to encourage intellectual inquiry as part of public life. Unfortunately, we are living in anti-intellectual times, and neo-fascism is becoming more normalized.

Today's answer to the question what is Hookland?
What is Hookland?

Hookland is England as seen from the ghost train.

It is a fierce refusal to let psychogeographers tell you that when you talk about spirits of place you can’t really believe in them. It is all the books you borrowed time and time again from the library as a child – encyclopaedias of horror films, Usborne’s Worlds of the Unknown UFOs and Charles Berlitz’s The Bermuda Triangle.

It is walking home through the woods in November mist and feeling that the place has monsters, not the sort they made into Aurora model kits, but old, nameless things that are fed by the fear you’ve had of this place since that murder a few years back. It is the terror of living in a haunted landscape. It is the delight of living in a profoundly haunted landscape. Hookland is the place that you can almost allow yourself to believe in magic again before realising it is a territory you already inhabit. Shared space where all the broken memories of childhood are resuscitated and walking alongside you.

It is knowing the names of Soviet spacemen orbiting above and feeling the youthful power if recognising which mushrooms are poisonous. It is sneaking into fields to release crows from cruel traps and thinking up mad schemes to raise money to buy fireworks when the air becomes rich with the intoxicating smell of bonfires. It’s being more scared by gaudy movie posters for films that you haven’t ever seen than being afraid of the things your parents constantly warn you about.

It is knowing that everywhere is layers of story, layers of memory and realising you may be the ghost of someone else’s future.

It is a French radio station on AM, full of songs you hear and instantly love, but will spend the rest of your life trying to remember what the title was, which band it was.

On its jagged rocks, its snaring brambles, fragments of ripped cloth that you know are clues to something you have forgotten. Something important you cannot unlock.

It is home.
