My cat hissed at me for the very first time. My crime? I asked her to get out of the potato bed because she was crushing the shoots. She really wants to be in that potato bed!

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

Dolly Parton supported so many important causes, among them donating a million dollars to COVID vaccine research early in the pandemic, which saved millions of lives. She will always be remembered as a champion of the people.

This grotesque headline is from the Telegraph. 3,000 people in Britain have been killed in heatwaves this year so far. 20,000 in Europe. Even if Britain did get to “embrace Mediterranean life”, what about the actual Mediterranean, what do they get to embrace? What about India?

Really quite excited to undertake my annual Booker longlist reading (in which I try and typically fail to read all the listees before the winner is announced). The past couple of years, my heart hasn’t been in it. But this year’s list has me ready to hit the bookshop.

How hot is it in our house? Our cat, despite being furnished with ice cube stations, has pioneered a new approach to moving about the hall: dragging her prone body along the carpet, for a considerable distance, using one claw.

At the theatre last night, I saw a teenaged kid wearing a tee shirt that read, in block capital letters, ‘ask me anything about Wolf Hall.’ Excellent quality of kid.

I’m thinking of entering #Eurovision next year doing a 3-minute abridged version of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight read in Middle English, accompanied by a lute-playing John Cooper Clarke (who’ll hopefully agree to be paid on results). Surely an inexpensive way to 0 points or even 1. Any takers?
Picture showing a copy of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Michael Smith laid on top of a full colour linocut by him showing Sir Gawain riding his white horse.

Voted in my first local election after having become a citizen. Not too proud to say it made me a bit emotional, standing there in the church hall, voting for some really mediocre options.

Do drivers who stop in traffic and try to wave pedestrians across the road genuinely not understand that they are creating a really dangerous situation for everyone? This message brought to you by a lady who just screamed at me for not walking out into traffic at her insistence.

I hope one of the things we will take away from this moment is that if we want survivors to be able to come forward immediately, then we need to be willing to protect them no matter how much we like, respect, or fear their perpetrator.

I know it’s hard to have optimism right now, but if there’s one thing that is genuinely giving me hope it is seeing communities — hell, neighborhoods, even portions of cities — stand up in unison against tyranny in a way that is active, capable, savvy. It’s really powerful.

I went to an art exhibit today that was very prescriptive about how the audience must interact with it. We were told we had to verbalise responses to certain pieces, and gallery staff came round to tell us where to stand, what to do. It’s been bothering me all day.

Saved by Stoppard
Sir, In 1993 my wife and I went to see the first production of Arcadia by Tom Stoppard (obituary, Dec I), and in the interval I experienced a Damascene conversion. As a clinical scientist I was trying to understand the enigma of the behaviour of breast cancer, the assumption being that it grew in a linear trajectory spitting off metastases on its way. In the first act of Arcadia, Thomasina asks her tutor, Septimus: "If there is an equation for a curve like a bell, there must be an equation for one like a bluebell, and if a bluebell, why not a rose?" With that Stoppard explains chaos theory, which better explains the behaviour of breast cancer. At the point of diagnosis, the cancer must have already scattered cancer cells into the circulation that nest latent in distant organs. The consequence of that hypothesis was the birth of "adjuvant systemic chemotherapy", and rapidly we saw a striking fall of the curve that illustrated patients' survival.
Stoppard never learnt how many lives he saved by writing Arcadia.

The Covid enquiry has concluded that the reality we all witnessed *was* the actual reality, and the version which Johnson, Cummings et al insisted was happening was a total fabrication. It’s incredible that we have to have lengthy enquiries after the event to establish consensus reality now.

One of the great heartbreaks of being in the disability community is how often we lose people and how many of our most powerful voices have gone silent. We must live our lives loudly and joyously in their honor and remember that our very existence is resistance.

To explain briefly: at the moment people successful in their asylum claims get permission to stay in the UK for 5 years, then have to apply for permanent residency. At that point a review of their status is done, but it’s rare not to succeed at that point unless they‘ve committed an offence 1/
