If Democrats retake the Senate, Warren will surely become chair of the Senate Banking Committee and, as such, in a position to investigate, humiliate and ultimately destroy Scott Bessent.

One of the hottest tickets at this year's #LFF is a film from 1971: the long-awaited restoration/reconstruction of Ken Russell's The Devils, spearheaded by Mark Kermode, who spoke before the event. The special guest: Vanessa Redgrave, who received a standing ovation. Ken's family also in attendance.

At Tony Rayns' memorial. I didn't know Tony, but I've seen his name in the credits of dozens of films. No one has done more to champion Asian film, particularly emerging filmmakers now considered masters. One of which, Lee Chang-dong, is here for #LFF with Possible Love, which I'll be seeing today.
Program for the event with speakers listed. Many will be speaking via recording or Zoom. I am likely to cry.

Now waiting in line for Elsinore, because there's nothing quite like watching two movies back to back about passionate performers dying from AIDS at a time when there was no hope whatsoever of survival. I'm staying with a former sales agent who once saw Ian Charleson on stage, though not in Hamlet.

Not everything works, but Malek's performance of "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma" doesn't just compensate, but the entire role plays as a sort of riposte to the offputting characterization of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. And Luther Ford is a revelation as a hopelessly naïve fan.

It's unlikely I'll ever be able to completely embrace Rami Malek as a performer. I've rarely seen an actor walk and talk more strangely on screen, and that remains true of Ira Sachs' The Man I Love, but not since Sam Esmail has a director figured out how to make that weird physicality work. #LFF

October at @nwfilmforum.bsky.social: a lot of good stuff! A few highlights: History of Concrete has been such a hit, they've added additional screenings on Oct 12 and 13, @seattlecritics.bsky.social presents Green Room w/J Saulnier interview on Oct 14, and the new 4K of Begotten premieres Oct 23.

Black text on white background
"This day is profoundly painful for so many New Yorkers. It marks three years since the horrific war crimes of October 7. On that day, Hamas killed more than 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 others. We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss.

The suffering did not begin nor end that day. It instead continued through the Israeli government’s devastating, ongoing genocide in Gaza, in which it has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians—including more than 21,000 children. Even since the so-called ceasefire, more than 1,400 Palestinians have been killed. That suffering has intensified with every Israeli bomb dropped on ambulances waiting outside hospitals, every drone strike targeting a residential building or journalist, and every shipment of food aid turned away at a border crossing. Many New Yorkers are reckoning with this unbearable grief, and we mourn alongside them – all while knowing that our tax dollars fund these war crimes.

Three years later, we must refuse to accept a world in which occupation and apartheid continue, where war crimes are met with impunity, and our federal government continues its complicity with every arms shipment.

To honor the dead, we must fight for a world in which every person can live with freedom, safety, and dignity."
