The Decent Parts of ‘Digger’ Are Buried Beneath the Most Tiresome — micah rickard
Movie review of Alejandro Iñárritu's 'Digger' starring Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed, and Sandra Hüller. A bizarre climate satire with more going on behind the curtain.

Variety didn't take heed of the AP guidance, I suppose. So let me restate: AI cannot "be an actor." Nor can it love anything. It can proffer those words but only as a thin veneer, in turn commodifying those vital concepts

I wanted PRIMETIME to explore its concerns with greater incision, but "style outpaces pointed interrogation. There are thorny questions as Hansen’s crew presses for bigger spectacles... but relegating these concerns to a tertiary place in the film makes it all feel slight."

‘Primetime’ Airs A Vast Network of Ethical Quandaries — micah rickard
Movie review of Lance Oppenheim's 'Primetime' starring Robert Pattinson and Skyler Gisondo. A lurid depiction of an ethically troubled media landscape focusing on Chris Hansen's 'To Catch a Predator.'

Excellent declaration. Language is crucial for many things, including shaping our perceptions about the objects of our speech. AI can't act (as in an "AI actress"). It can't apologize. It can't be kind. It can't have a personality (just coding). I'm tempted to go so far as to say it can't speak.

The White House just launched "TRUMP TV: The Essentials Station" — a nonstop stream featuring President Trump's speeches, major announcements, past highlights and administration updates, refreshed in real time.
The launch comes amid Trump's escalating fight with
CNN, MS NOW and Politico, which have sued his administration after being barred from White House access.
Americans can now watch the White House's own selected footage and announcements DIRECTLY,

The spirals of tension and comedy are tightly wound in Zach Cregger's RESIDENT EVIL, making for an impeccable first hour that carries the fun through a looser climax. And Abrams puts on a very effective one man performance for most of it. Pure fun through undead IP (in more than one sense).

Two notes here: 1. Hard to convey how unusual it is for an admin to be pitted against this many religious groups in *so many different ways* all at the same time in court. The Trump admin is an outlier here. 2. I’m a religion reporter, but unclear why this trend hasn’t gotten more attention.

We are a broken nation. Hundreds of thousands of Haitians were living and working legally, paying taxes, and contributing. Haiti remains wholly unsafe. But Trump hates Haitians, and the White House wanted videos of Black people in chains, so they stripped them of status and turned on the cameras.

'The End of Oak Street' is "smarter than its high concept and bolder than its popcorn flick premise imply. But the precarity—or perhaps superposition—of its tone between ironic and emotionally sincere leaves me at a distance. It’s a movie that tries to have its dad redemption arc and eat it, too."

'Tony' is solid, if too straightforward, and is most noteworthy as a showcase for Dominic Sessa. "Johnson wisely emphasizes the moments of failure and loneliness that haunt Tony. Sessa’s characterization makes Tony both captivating and readily deserving of a punch to the face."

My recent series at CAPC has given me the chance to write about some of my favorite films from the past decade: The Green Knight, Annihilation, and in my latest, Alice Rohrwacher's extraordinary La Chimera. It's an insightful film. A political film. And a transcendent film.

Nolan's THE ODYSSEY delivers much with its monumental scale, but it still left me in want of a bit more. Namely, more time for the supporting cast to flesh out their characters. (More screen time for Zendaya and Lupita. And O Benny Safdie, where art thou?)
