A challenge I have to mainstream journalists who believe in their own neutrality and objectivity is to simply think about what they would do if the political consensus on their beat shifted as quickly and drastically as it did on mine.

just ban frats. everyone knows that’s the answer and no one seriously denies what frats are actually for, just as no one seriously denies that playing football can lead to CTE.

I'm not anywhere near campus right now, but a lot of what's in this piece lines up with what it feels like to be an alumna of Cornell. I knew my freshman year that the university wouldn't protect me if I was assaulted. The subsequent years never convinced me otherwise. www.thecut.com/article/what...

What It Feels Like at Cornell Right Now
As a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

I keep thinking about this and Nikole Hannah-Jones' pieces and how all the pain and devil's bargains with modern K-12 schooling is all in service of sending kids to places like this. At every "elite" high school, this is the goal. For fucking what?

Most Americans who watch cable news are in a constant state of panic while also being completely uninformed of reality, which is why the “median voter” these news companies are all appealing to makes 0 sense.

This is a guy who could have taken his prominence in the community to lobby for the restoration/expansion of US research funding, to advocate for protections for international students & post docs. This is a guy who could probably get the ear of senators. But nah, he's leaving.

it's funny but also a reminder that the fundamental premise here is that a Black man can't be objective when talking about race while a white man can because Black people do identity politics and white people do facts and this my friends is what I have named "white empiricism"

Today in AI is mediocre: I've been trying an AI-assisted service for searching scientific papers, figuring that LLMs should be pretty good at reading papers and identifying similarities, right?

Good article, but there’s one understated piece: higher land use of organic ag means that if we shift toward organic at current consumption patterns, more natural ecosystems need to be cleared for farming, causing carbon losses, making total GHG emissions of organic usually higher vs. conventional.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse
