I know there’s a meme about your biggest unexpected enemy in adulthood being the person who owned your house before you, and I get that, but for me, it’s whoever decided to plant a laurel border hedge on the street side of my garden fence, may their socks always be wet and their pillow warm.

The model created from the Flag Fen auger survey shows that the basin around the post-alignment has a gentle gradient across its western half, beside a deeper 250-300m wide “valley” across the eastern half. This eastern deeper, wetter zone corresponds to the location of the Flag Fen platform.
The deposit model created during the Flag Fen auger survey, with differing colours indicating the variations in depth across the Flag Fen basin.

My favourite part was measuring one point at a very soggy nearly three metres in what is now the Iron Age house paddock, and then the next one towards Northey being a sandy, gritty about 40cm. Amazing to see the difference between the basin and the (relatively) high and dry land.

Last year’s Flag Fen auger survey was designed to accurately map the pre-Holocene land surface and surviving Holocene sediment sequence in the area around the Flag Fen post-alignment. This week we’ll be exploring the project and some of its findings. Photo: Emma Bothamley.

It’s interesting to hear Alan Lee and John Howe talking about imagining and creating the remains of the ancient Númenorian civilisation in the landscape of Middle Earth in the extended edition Lord of the Rings DVDs and how Egyptian ruins influenced that. Love this thread of nerdy goodness.

So the last group of people that might realistically be called "indigenous" inhabitants of the British Isles a bunch of hunter-gatherers that we don't have a name for, from Doggerland, a place that is now fully under the sea, and who haven't existed for 6,000 years.

And the Neolithic farmers who migrated to the British Isles first came from Anatolia in modern-day Turkey (fuck off, I'm not calling it "Türkiye" that's ethnonationalist bullshit itself). They replaced about 90% of the genepool of the prior Mesolithic inhabitants who were culturally hunter-gatherers

I cannot overstate how much the Bronze Age revolution changed the cultural fabric of Britain. Stonehenge is a cultural hybrid - the earlier phases of it we constructed by Neolithic people with no knowledge of metal-working, and the later phases by Bronze Age early Celtic-speaking Britons.

And prior to that the introduction of Celtic languages happened through various periods of migration during the Bronze Age, starting with the Bell Beaker people (fucking Beakers, coming over here, drinking out of cups). This totally upended neolithic society.

If anything, Iron Age Britain (England did not exist, remember) was even *less* culturally homogenous as the various Celtic tribes all had their own traditions, beliefs and political interests, and (in the south at least) were also mixing with, and yes fucking, their Gallic and Belgic counterparts.

Prior to that, the concept of "England" didn't exist at all. It was just "Britannia". Romano-British culture was, as the name implies, a hybrid of Roman and "native" (I'll get to that in a minute) Celtic cultures, and pre-Roman Celtic Britain was just a bunch of tribes who all shared an island.

As for "Anglo-Saxon" as an ethnicity: my brother in Christ, have you heard of the Heptarchy? Have you heard of the Danelaw? Fuckssake, in the 6th Century Herefordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire were still essentially in Wales.

1,000 years you might note, takes you back to AD 1026, and 40 years after that was the Norman Invasion. So, if you are of European desecent, among the various Celtic Britons, "Anglo-Saxons" (not real) and Normans, there is a bunch of them that you, and I, are ALL genealogically descended from..

Once again, speaking as a professional archaeologist: "English" is not an ethnicity in any meaningful sense. You only have to go back about 1,000 years before everyone in Europe has the same group of common genealogical ancestors. Humans have lived on the British Isles for almost a million years.

Re the Englishness discourse, an American colleague once asked me, “What are you?” meaning ethnicity, and could not comprehend everyone in my very boring family tree being an English person born in England back to at least the mid 1700s, and ended up going, “Well, you must be SOMETHING!”

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

Quilt hanging on a card catalog. Neutral background with navy cursive appliqué “Do you hear thr people sing?” The background is embroidered in red starting light and getting bolder the lyrics to “killing in the name” the quilting effect is a focused sunburst from the center.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

Any lives lost due to this closure should be laid firmly at the feet of the far-right agitators who caused this. The way in which anti-asylum activists are putting more and more people at risk should be a wake up call that it is time to genuinely combat them, rather than pandering to their ideology.

Not to be a tragic millennial nerd, but I love that the first music you hear in the opening of The Fellowship of the Ring is a choral version of a couple of lines of the Lothlórien theme because Galadriel is narrating the prologue.
