In all seriousness, one thing that might be worth doing today: Tell your Reps and Senators to call Adm. Richard Correll, the Commander of U.S. Strategic Command, which controls the nation's nukes, and remind him of *his* unique responsibility to refuse an illegal order.

Just got gassed pretty good at the labor union anti-ICE protest in Portland. Massive march, 5-10k strong. Vibes were very much liberal rather than radical. Lots of kids and older folks. They gassed the whole crowd as soon as it marched on ICE, in broad daylight.

The amount of money the US government spent on troops in DC in 2025 ($223m) would have been enough to give the city's ~5,100 homeless residents each $43,000. Instead, federal troops destroyed their meager encampments.

The amount of organizing happening in a VERY short period of time is truly mind boggling. I've seen things come together in hours that, in the nonprofit & education spaces, would take weeks or MONTHS of planning and coordination. So, so proud of the Twin Cities right now.
The only meaningful pushback against the terror campaign comes in the form of my neighbors, regular people doing extraordinary and difficult work. They are coordinating themselves from the bottom up, grassroots, using phone chat apps. They are patrolling outside schools and immigrant businesses. They are putting in hours tailing ICE agents, blowing whistles, and witnessing the questionable incarceration of vulnerable neighbors. I know many people who have done this work every day, and I am in awe of their courage.

For better or for worse, the trauma of 2020 prepared many people in the Twin Cities for this moment, pitting armed, well-funded masked men against average people with cell phones and plastic whistles. The only advantages for my neighbors are solidarity, moral clarity and whatever rights remain in this moment.

Tumblr user nocryptographer:
I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation.
A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written.
AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence.
Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same.
There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that.
I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it.
If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene...
then it's real.

Can you put into words what that purpose is? You and the frog have really become icons of this protest.

There’s been a nice overall whimsy that has shown up. The frog is amazing. We had a bunch of other inflatable people here last night, too. I saw people playing Twister the other day.

What they rely on is fear. So by coming out in an absurdist manner, it speaks to them, to some extent, that we’re actually not that afraid.

It also dismantles their narrative a little bit. When they try to describe this situation as “war-torn,” it becomes much harder to take them seriously when they have to post a video saying [U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security] Kristi Noem is up on the balcony staring over the Antifa Army and it’s, like, eight journalists and five protesters and one of them is in a chicken suit.

If you live in Oregon you gotta push our legislators to fund transit and not cut service. In 5 years you’ll wish you’d said something 🙁
Last year, I plead for the state to fund transit at the transportation road show. I was not alone; per a report by 1000 Friends of Oregon, funding transit was the #1 priority by a large margin. I had no expectations of a bold new vision for transit from the package, as the phrase “back to basics” was repeated until it had lost all meaning. What I did expect, at least, was a maintenance of existing service; after all, my “basics” include the bus service I moved to Oregon for! That’s why I am appalled at the legislatures choice to raise the STIF tax by a mere 0.08% when the Oregon Transportation Association requested a 0.4% hike to avoid transit cuts. You may not ride transit, but someone in your community does, and they deserve the dignity of no transit service cuts, at the very least. I share a single car with my partner (she works in Vancouver and needs it) so any cuts to service restrict MY mobility and restrict MY freedom of movement. “Back to basics” must include a maintenance of existing transit service, if not an expansion; so I once again beg that you raise the STIF Tax as requested by OTA. Do not turn your back on your voters, especially those already marginalized by a lack of car ownership.
