Each of these essays is a small gem, while it should also be said that Rebecca Futo Kennedy’s chapter on race and the metic must now be required reading for anyone interested in the continuing debate over the use of race as a category of analysis in ancient studies. Her provocative claim that metic became a racialized category in the 5th and 4th century is argued with great skill and is an exhilarating read.

In fact, it is the essays that develop novel and unexpected arguments that make the volume most exciting. Just as Futo Kennedy situates the legal category of metoikia within a broader kaleidoscope of contested statuses structured around inclusion and exclusion…

I just had virtually the same conversation with my nephew (humanities edition) - he’s graduating college in May and had wanted to go into academia but says it’s totally infeasible with so many departments not taking grad students and funding drying up. We’re losing an entire generation of scholars.

Had to be at least a decade ago that a NPR show hosted a historian who had published a book on the Stasi and the SS. It turned out the SS et al., had not been the magical intelligence machines at all but had relied almost entirely on neighbors lining up to rat out each other.

Palestine is literally the ancient word for the region under the Romans. If one is talking about the Roman period, it is the historically accurate term regardless of modern political affiliations.
