This is the definition of cruel and unusual punishment. The state of Tennessee botched an execution and tried to hide the gory consequences as witnesses twice watched a woman survival the supposedly “lethal” injection. The death penalty is a crime against humanity.

I have a distinct memory of learning about the horror of the death penalty as a little girl. My family are every flavor of pacifist anabaptist, which my mom explained meant that we opposed the murder of individuals by the state- because the state could never have that authority.

I really think Jon Ossoff, James Talarico, and a few others are in the process of creating a new kind of language, a new politics, for the era of Late Stage Trumpism. As I argue in the piece, the banal cruelties of sunsetting Trumpism are all around us, and some Dems are pointing to a way out.

Happy Michaelmas! In some parts of Ireland on this day, rent could be paid in geese. If you’re due to pay rent this month, please consider setting a very irritated goose on your landlord in lieu of payment, in the name of upholding important Irish traditions.
A drawing of mine of a goose looking concerned, with a tag around its neck that reads "This month's rent, with thanks".

Day 2 update on Wilber.

Today, we held a press conference demanding answers and accountability after Wilber was shot by ICE.

In the middle of the press conference, Wilber called his wife and said he wanted to speak. We held the phone up to the microphone so he could tell everyone what had happened to him.

Wilber said he was shot in the back and discharged from the hospital just four hours later, with the bullet still lodged in his back.

Very probably the best photo I've ever taken of a 16th Century dovecote with a cow standing in front of it, surrounded by buttercups, looking like she has just dropped a debut album she is thoroughly proud of.
A cow, standing in front of the dovecote in Bruton, Somerset, about a month ago. Lovely town. Beautiful architecture. Had a chat with a really nice lady from an old farming family after I took this. Sadly quite a few stuck-up down-from-London snotbags live there these days and houses cost a fortune as a result.
