Far-UVC. What is it? How does it inactivate airborne pathogens? Will it give you sunburns? If not, why not? And if they work, why aren't they everywhere? In my latest explainer video I dive into all these questions and try to make some sense of it all. youtu.be/ujHMIdI2gLs

It’s been 10 years to the day since the Brexit vote. The sun is shining, where are all the Brexit parties and parades? I was told this was the UK’s “Independence Day”, what happened? Oh right, it was a total (and predictable) disaster.

While the virology in this article is interesting, there are fundamental issues in the underlying assuptions made by the authors. This research group believes that deep lung fluid is identical to Hanks Balanced Salt Solution. What this means is that the pH dynamics of the aerosol are incorrect.

Over the past decade, vaping has become a popular alternative to smoking, with many teenagers picking it up. The thought being that vaping is less harmful, if harmful at all. The question is, are they? What happens when you vape? In my latest explainer video I dive into this.

Airborne disease transmission doesn't just affect human populations. In collaboration with Herek Clack at the University of Michigan, my team has been funded $2M to study mechanisms of bird flu decay in the air, and to explore novel mitigation strategies. www.news-medical.net/news/2026032...

Aerosols are very small, have a high surface to volume ratio and can readily reach super saturation. This combination makes them a unique environment for chemical reactions. We had a paper published in JACS that looked into the rate of chemical reactions within and on aerosols.

Since measles is coming back, here's a question: What is the "half-life" of airborne decay of measles? Answer: We have no idea. People think it's long (1 to 2 hours). Why don't we know? Funders largely felt there wasn't a need to measure it since it was managed with vaccines.

I got this question that I thought some might find interesting. In short, why does the CO2 levels in a hockey arena trend upwards even though it has an upgraded HVAC?

CO2 monitors are great for estimating both air quality and the risk airborne disease transmission in a given space. A study just came out comparing the top of the line Aranet with a low cost alternative (Vitalight). Turns out they work just as well in typical environments.

The risk of the airborne transmission of disease correlates with the amount of infectious exhaled aerosol. Since people exhale CO2 with aerosol, its conc has been used as proxy for exhaled aerosol In this article, researchers propose a new way to estimate risk of transmission

How long a microbe remains viable in the air will depend on where it resides in/on an aerosol. So then, how do scientists figure out where? Answer: they use their understanding of the processes involved in industrial food production. Namely, coffee. youtu.be/HHwp4tLPK9M

One of the reasons why I go so hard on science misinformation/disinformation, is that as a working scientist it is frustrating to see your research misreported to push an agenda. For example, consider this piece of right-wing propaganda from The Telegraph that was just published
