I’ve found it remarkable how little conversation there has been about women dying in the US as a result of the bans. Obvs this is a reporting gap across the board re bans - but the US *went backwards* so I thought there would be more outrage. There wasn’t.

“The rate of ectopic pregnancy deaths in states with abortion bans is nearly double that in states where abortion is legal.” That stat should shame every anti abortionist in the world.

While defending the luddite argument in Discord, I stumbled into this IMO succinct explanation for opposing generative AI: At every step in the process, it impoverishes us.
AI impoverishes us at every step of the process:
- data centers pollute our environment
- energy use drives up costs
- content theft robs creators of income
- the actual output is used to displace workers and depress wages
- using it harms our mental health and impairs our competence
- the flood of AI slop is damaging our sociopolitical landscape

All in service of making a worse product - and world - to enrich a handful of already spectacularly wealthy people

Just saw this great post again and it reminded me of my old beef against "spoilers don't matter, a good film isn't spoilable": The timing with which information is revealed is important in every movie! It's as much a part of the art as dialogue or lighting,it matters at least as much as aspect ratio

Yup.
Sometimes people use "respect" to mean "treating someone like a person" and sometimes they use "respect" to mean "treating someone like an authority"
and sometimes people who are used to being treated like an authority say "if you won't respect me I won't respect you" and they mean "if you won't treat me like an authority I won't treat you like a person"
and they think they're being fair but they aren't, and it's not okay.

ON TOP of the ethical reasons to not use AI, it's also 1) bad at what it does 2) literally makes you stupider 3) has HUGE environmental costs: every search is equivalent to pouring out an entire bottle of water. It's not worth it to generate a cutesy emoji or have it write an error-riddled draft.

This page sold me on THE TITAN's first issue by itself. Love how the negative space in the second panel not only suggests a ceiling, but helps convey how dark and dingy this booth is. And "oh it's just fun watching you walk into a room" is such a killer line. Go, read: titancomic.net/comic/v1c1/
A page from the first issue of Lannan's new self-published comicbook, THE TITAN. Three panels, the first an establishing shot depicting the bar at a desert watering hole, with a cast of rough, but happy patrons. The second showing a femme person sitting at a booth in a dark, heavily graffiti'd corner. The third panel shows the reverse angle of the previous panel, with the main character, Ansel Dune, standing in front of the booth.

Half a page from the comicbook FML, issue #1, art by David López, Cris Peter, words by Kelly Sue Deconnick, lettering by Clayton Cowles. The panels depict a scene where some teens read a zine and geek out about it. Ominous things might or might not take place directly after this zine scene
