While bond market dooming is in vogue, the reality is most of the US yield move has come in response to stronger than expected economic surprises. A dynamic that could easily reverse given how high forward expectations have become. h/t @thedailyshot

This is good and overlays nicely with my qualitative view that 1) long term rates now price truly aggressive risk premiums/growth assumptions and can’t go much further 2) the length and scale of this move makes a top in yields increasingly likely. Nobody left to sell.

One of the talking points of the late 1990s tech bubble was that tech investment had such a high rate of return that rate hikes were irrelevant.

Bang on: "Dollar strength is never a time when foreign central banks are buying Treasuries. If anything, they sell Treasuries to defend their own currencies. None of this is about intrinsic demand for US government debt. In fact, it’s anything but."

Dom, as usual, is highly persuasive here. The impact of the Iran shock's second wave seems to have been dulled by evidence of economic resilience and by a change in the expected policy response:

Though, to be clear, I think that's only half of the explanation. It's also the resilience of global demand that is affording central banks the ability to do so. If there was more of a growth vs inflation dilemma, I'm sure all of this would look different.

Central banks are back in tightening mode as they move away from a long-standing tendency to "look through" supply shocks in the face of large, persistent, and recurring disruptions (as highlighted in yesterday's speech from @goolsbee.bsky.social here: www.chicagofed.org/publications...)

Canadian exports to the EU cannot compensate for lost access to US markets. But a lack of fiscal restraint in Washington, coupled with the war in the Middle East, means it scarcely matters. Canadian exports are still growing as the Trump administration's economic policies work at cross-purposes.
