And, good news for the peacemakers & middle children who just want everyone to get along, there *is* a handy test for whether someone who made the out-of-pocket “joke” or whatever is a predator kidding on the square or a salvageable one-off mistake. But to run it, *you* must speak up.

Anyway, the tech companies shouldn't be trusted to make computer software that touches your private data, and themselves, their very employees, are warning you not to trust it and that it will be existentially threatening to you if you do.

Great moments in Scottish engineering history: James Watt tries to work out how his phone attaches to his selfie stick.
Statue of James Watt. In his right hand he holds a telescopic stick with a frame at the top; in his left he holds a flat object about the size of a large smartphone. He is scowling at the possibly-not-a-smartphone as if he is tempted to yeet it into the sea. On that basis, it probably _is_ a phone.

The issue isn't even just STEM vs humanities, it's parts of STEM as well. Someone can study an engineering discipline, or pure mathematics, and get absolutely no grounding in the natural sciences and empirical methodology. That's how we got mechinterp.

I have fairly strong opinions of that kind of system, actually: India has this system, where you "decide" early STEM or humanities early on, and the perception is STEM="intelligent" students, humanities=not. The STEM branch rarely get any humanities, and are taught they don't need it. I genuinely..

Discworld QOTD, from Mort
The only thing known to go faster than ordinary light is monarchy, according to the philosopher Ly Tin Wheedle. He reasoned like this: you can't have more than one king, and tradition demands that there is no gap between kings, so when a king dies the succession must therefore pass to the heir instantaneously. Presumably, he said, there must be some elementary particles -- kingons, or possibly queons -- that do this job, but of course succession sometimes fails if, in mid-flight, they strike an anti-particle, or republicon. His ambitious plans to use his discovery to send messages, involving the careful torturing of a small king in order to modulate the signal, were never fully expanded because, at that point, the bar closed.

Discworld QOTD, from Eric
“But I read where she was the most beautiful—”
“Ah, well,” said the sergeant. “If you’re going to go around reading—”
“The thing is,” said Rincewind quickly, “it’s what they call dramatic necessity. No one’s going to be interested in a war fought over a, a quite pleasant lady, moderately attractive in a good light. Are they?”
Eric was nearly in tears.
“But it said her face launched a thousand ships—”
“That’s what you call metaphor,” said Rincewind.
“Lying,” the sergeant explained kindly.

You know when public attention can reverse a prosecutorial decision like this you almost get the sense that the decision to shrug it off in the first place was not based on an assessment of the quality of the evidence so much as an assessment of the seriousness of the crime.
