Occasionally someone says something like "Well, you work in industry, why should you care?" And my response is that every single person working in industrial science and engineering came up through academic scientific training, and that the US has been responsible for a huge amount of the basic research that we've been building the whole scientific enterprise on. We're now engaged in tearing all of that down, and it's a crime against this nation, against its people, and against the rest of the human race - an unforgivable one.

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
Spaghetti chart showing Oxford Radcliffe Observatory daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1815 to 2026. 211 years of historical data are shown as very faint grey lines tracing a seasonal cycle from around 5°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, running from January through to late May before spiking sharply upward to reach 33.7°C on 26 May, well above the entire historical grey envelope for that time of year. A single dashed red reference line marks the previous May record of 30.6°C set on 29 May 1944. The 2026 reading exceeds this by 3.1°C and, in statistical terms, is the 6th most anomalous maximum temperature in Oxford's 211-year record, ranking as the most anomalous May maximum ever observed and coming within 0.6°C of the all-time June record of 34.3°C set in 1976.

𝘚𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘥, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘷𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘬𝘦𝘴. Maggie Kuhn was forced to retire at 65 & dedicated the rest of her life to fighting ageism & advocating for older adults' rights. Founded Gray Panthers, 1970. Was instrumental in the ban on mandatory retirement. Active until her death #OTD in 1995 at 89.
This black-and-white portrait captures Maggie Kuhn (1905–1995), the indomitable founder of the Gray Panthers, an activist group that revolutionized the fight against ageism. Seated in a relaxed yet attentive pose, Kuhn is seen in her later years, radiating a sense of sharp-witted wisdom and gentle defiance. She is dressed in a dark, structured, button-down jacket with a small round collar, featuring a prominent circular political button pinned to her left chest—a hallmark of her lifelong commitment to grassroots organizing. Her silver hair is elegantly swept back, and she wears thin-framed glasses that highlight her keen, observant eyes and a slight, knowing smile.

Her hands, weathered by time and adorned with simple rings, rest naturally in her lap, one draped over the arm of what appears to be a patterned chair. The background is softly out of focus, showing a glimpse of indoor foliage and a textured wall, suggesting a television studio or public forum setting where she frequently challenged societal norms. The composition is a medium shot that focuses on her presence as a formidable public figure. The mood is one of dignified strength and intellectual vitality, serving as a powerful visual testament to her legacy as a champion for intergenerational justice and the rights of the elderly.
