Up to 20%, when all is said and done – fully *one fifth* of our common wealth set aside for hospitals, schools, transport, and other vital services for an entire generation… …wasted on one road. Not even MOAR ROADZ; just ONE (1) ROAD. Grotesquely irresponsible. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/...
Headline of the story we’re all talking about this evening, 9 September 2024, by Thomas Coughlan, the New Zealand Herald’s deputy political editor. It reads: “One road to dominate 10% of infrastructure spending for next 25 years with warning costs could double”

This surely puts the country’s economic risk rating at, well, considerable risk!!A screenshot of the introductory section of the linked article. It reads:

“A single road network in Northland will consume one dollar in every 10 spent by the Government on infrastructure over the next 25 years - excluding maintenance and renewals - the Infrastructure Commission says.

In a paper on a Northland expressway network that will eventually connect Auckland and Whangārei, the commission warned that this was a large proportion of the pool of capital intended to be spent on all other central government infrastructure like, “roads, hospitals, schools, defence, justice, public admin, etc”.

It also warned that the already high cost of the project could double.”

An illustration comparing three traffic scenarios: the first showing a highway bottlenecking into a city; the second showing an ineffective solution with an increase in car lanes that still results in a bottleneck; and the third shows the impact that mass and active transit can have on traffic
