Ossoff and El-Sayed took different tacks tonight vs their opponents—El-Sayed was more of a subtext of “you dumb fucking racist jackass” while Ossoff’s was more “if you fell down at a gas station I’d toss a lit match on you”—and I don’t think either of those is a bad choice tbh

Fort Hood Shooter's
Execution Will be Public and Streamed Live, Pentagon Says
If carried out, the public execution of Maj.
Nidal Malik Hasan by firing squad set for Dec. 3 would be the first in modern US history.Pentagon officials said on Thursday that the Army officer convicted in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting would be executed in public, a practice that ended in the United States nearly a century ago and is most commonly carried out in a handful of countries including Iran, North Korea and the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan.

The Pentagon said in a statement that the military execution, scheduled for Dec. 3, would also be broadcast via livestream. Such a broadcast has little precedent, and releasing video of executions is most often associated with extremist militant groups like the Islamic State

In the 1950s and 1960s, life expectancy was 70 years old but people became parents at 22-25 and life expectancy was increasing each year, so you might expect to graduate high school before losing a grandparent. Now that it's increasing more slowly and age of parents has soared, that's no longer true

The age structure of the US changing like this is deeply *weird* in the way you see it showing up in people's experiences. "Children barely remember their grandparents" is one consequence of two successive generations where parenthood is something that happens in your 30s but life expectancy is 80

Yes, and when looking at marriage you do have to consider finance. People are on average financially better off, but how that translates to *marriage* is different! This could also tie to the slight decline in partnership since the 1990s, though "age at first date" isn't something anyone tracks.

What odd about the marriage statistics is how the median age explodes in the 2000s and 2010s despite the total college enrollment proportion being basically flat in the same time span (around 40-45% of high school graduates in 4-year degree programs).

On marriage, varies a lot by geo. I grew up in Iowa, went to college in Indiana & my 1st FT job at 21 was in Texas. It was pretty common then (2000s) in all 3 for friends to marry early-mid 20s. I moved to NYC in 2007 & it was rare to marry before 30. Talking mostly college grads, who marry later.

I still think the change in what kids are allowed to do on their own is notably different bc it’s not related to price (and in fact, costs more to have child care for kids until later age, even if you’re just running a short errand).

Some of that is affordability (mostly around housing, but weddings, cars, and children are also expensive). A lot of it is also just social conventions having changed since the 1990s and 2000s in the US - it's considered "weird" to get married at 22 in a way it wouldn't in 2005.

Our built infrastructure robs kids of their freedom of independent mobility. Streets are dominated by oversized vehicles, piloted by aggressive and distracted drivers where one mistake can turn lethal. We sacrificed child development to subsidize the auto industry.

Partly because the age at which it’s considered acceptable by many in the U.S. to do various things has jumped. I was babysitting my siblings and the neighbors across the street at an age friends won’t let their kid walk 2 blocks from school and some even say they might be arrested 😵‍💫

A portrait-mode rectangular painting of a white woman with long curly dark-blond hair, seated at an easel. She holds a paintbrush in her uplifted right hand, and clutches a handful of paintbrushes with her left hand, with which she also supports a palette. She wears a white or light blue gown that falls so far off her right shoulder that it nearly exposes her right breast. She also wears a pink sash, and is sitting on a gold cloak with a decorated border. At the right of the artwork is a portion of the painting she is working on, a copy of Jacques-Louis David's "Bélisaire et l'enfant à mi-corps."
