Self-portrait, 1786, by #MarieGuillemineBenoist (French, 1768-1826), who died #otd, Oct 8. Held by Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, www.kunsthalle-karlsruhe.de/kunstwerke/M... #artherstory #womenartists

A portrait-mode rectangular painting of a white woman with long curly dark-blond hair, seated at an easel. She holds a paintbrush in her uplifted right hand, and clutches a handful of paintbrushes with her left hand, with which she also supports a palette. She wears a white or light blue gown that falls so far off her right shoulder that it nearly exposes her right breast. She also wears a pink sash, and is sitting on a gold cloak with a decorated border. At the right of the artwork is a portion of the painting she is working on, a copy of Jacques-Louis David's "Bélisaire et l'enfant à mi-corps."
