The colder autumn nights in Germany coaxes this magnificent eagle, Oropherion, to spend his nights in his heated indoor winter aviary. This is an African Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus), the largest eagle species native to Africa. (Cr @birdsofprey_nathalie_denolf) #birds #eagle

Reading, and writing, are holy. I love reading novels because they tell me something. They say: "this is what someone believed enough to dedicate months or years of their life to say." This is just as true for the trashiest pulp as it is for the highest literature.

First: fuck ICE and everyone associated with it. Second: we need much more support for food-insecure people, ASAP. Third: long-term herd reduction helps the climate, the land being grazed to death, animal welfare, and human health. Beef is delicious but enormously wasteful as a food source.

Haven't thought this out all the way through, but now would be a good time for an aggressive humanitarian movement to combat the death cults, the rise of AI, and otherwise anti-life impulses coursing through our politics and society.

I'm upping my p(bloom) It is fall and the season for asters and goldenrods is almost upon us. Meanwhile, enjoy Claire Curtis mums and orange coneflower from last week.
A top-down view of part of my garden. On the left are the mums, with slender pink petals and yellow centers; on the right are the orange coneflowers, aka brown-eyed susans, with short fat yellow petals and black centers. Around them are sprays of goldenrod buds and the single buds of New England asters.

Imagine you're shrunk down to amoeba size & could observe a tiny plant root under the soil. The first thing you might notice is that the root isn't all plant cells. Both inside & outside the root are symbiotic fungal cells (grey in photo) in close association, working together. (🔬:Eye of Science)
It looks like giant dried cells with visible cell walls in brown and yellow, with green phloem tissue, but the grey stuff, which looks all sort of wispy and tangled, are the fungal cells that are in partnership.

Brewster's Woods Wildlife Sanctuary, in Concord, MA. This was my first time at this out-of-the-way, modest little Audubon sanctuary. (Most people in Concord go to Walden, Estabrook, Old North Bridge, etc.) I didn't see a single other human. Also, wolf trees are SO COOL. Must have been pasture once!

Hello new followers from the Naturalists starter pack! I promise I will post more plant content! Was in Burlington VT last week, and took a short hike through Rock Point. Geology is weird there, and the cliffside plant community is more calcareous-leaning than most. www.uvm.edu/place/burlin...
A looking-down photo of scruffy trailside plants. The assemblage includes early meadow rue (Thalictrum dioicum), Solomon's plume (Maianthemum racemosum), bigleaf aster (Eurybia macrophylla), blue-stemmed goldenrod (Solidago caesia), maples, sedges, and invasive buckthorn.

This gallery of ICE crop/seed art at this year's Minnesota State Fair is incredible, especially the one based on Pablo Picasso's Guernica by Jennifer Nelson, which features the last words of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Morse code: www.cropart.com/Resist.pdf
A seed art entry in the 2026 Minnesota State Fair based on Pablo Picasso's Guernica. It features a loon, the words "Ice Out" and two representations of Renee Good and Alex Pretti’s. Notably, the mouths of Good and Pretty include their last words in Morse code:
‘I’m not mad at you,’ and ‘Are you okay?’” The artist is Jennifer Nelson.

dolly parton was many things, but what i think resonates so deeply is that she was kind. ACTIVELY kind. when i talk about proving love, this is what i mean. ACTIVE kindness. ACTIVE love. it can be easy to dismiss kindness, but i think the reaction to her passing shows it is not at all a placeholder

You're looking at a 200 year-old wisteria vine at Byakugou-ji Temple in Tamba, Hyogo, Japan. The delicate pink/purple blossoms create an otherworldly place where magic can happen. But here's an interesting fact: wisteria are in the legume family (Fabaceae). This is a magic beanstalk.
Taken from a Reddit post, a framework supports purple-pink blossoms that blot out the top of the photo, shading the light a magical color, with a dark vine stem in the distance.

I don't think these times have been a solvent for decency at all. This has been a precipitation process. It has made decent people coalesce & show themselves. We're also seeing how many people had just been superficially feigning decency, because that used to be a social/professional expectation.
