So glad to see the Mississippi Democrats go on the offensive. FINALLY! (The ad is funny as hell, and Hyde-Smith needs to be gone; she's just a thinly-veiled racist Trump mouthpiece with a head full of hot air.)

Ahhh. I have a teal and purple wool shawl from Zuri coming in, and this would be PERFECT. (So would that amethyst necklace from yesterday, but $$$, so oh well!)

Those are GORGEOUS and I would not have been able to buy them anyway tonight, so I'm glad they made someone happy!

I was going over some of the trends/eras of illustration with my students today and Corporate Memphis created the most conversation. It was compared to a business man in a happy face mask, Arial & pop music. Good in contexts like brightening up a train station, bad in masking the cruelness of tech.

I once loved Harry Potter. I once loved Sandman. The literature is still what it's always been, but the authors' misdeeds cast a long shadow over them. I can read other things. There are PLENTY of other good books, graphic novels, movies.

A common Eastern bumblebee clinging to heartleaf blue aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium). What amazes me about this closeup - and what I can't see in person - is how beautiful the disk flowers are. Lookit those little yellow tulip-shaped flowers!
An extremely fuzzy bumblebee hangs upside-down from a spray of 10 or so aster flowers. The ray petals are very lightly lavender-colored, but the disk flowers are as described. (Some of those have gone by, and are now dark red-purple instead.)

A cute little American Copper butterfly in my yard this evening, dining on white snakeroot. (Along with fifty thousand other pollinators.) I especially love the silvery fringe on the edge of its wing.
An delicate orange and beige butterfly with sparse black spots, in a side-presenting pose. You see the underside of one wing - backlit by the setting sun - and a bit of the other wing's topside. The butterfly's body is fuzzy white, matching the fuzzy white composite flowers it's walking on. The background is out-of-focus green and yellow plants.

The colder autumn nights in Germany coaxes this magnificent eagle, Oropherion, to spend his nights in his heated indoor winter aviary. This is an African Martial Eagle (Polemaetus bellicosus), the largest eagle species native to Africa. (Cr @birdsofprey_nathalie_denolf) #birds #eagle

Reading, and writing, are holy. I love reading novels because they tell me something. They say: "this is what someone believed enough to dedicate months or years of their life to say." This is just as true for the trashiest pulp as it is for the highest literature.

If it works, smash it. If it's sacred, desecrate it. If it's valuable, steal it.

As long as their preferred party continues to hurt the people they despise, sure. They've consistently shown that they will vote against their own interests as long as "those people" get it worse.

First: fuck ICE and everyone associated with it. Second: we need much more support for food-insecure people, ASAP. Third: long-term herd reduction helps the climate, the land being grazed to death, animal welfare, and human health. Beef is delicious but enormously wasteful as a food source.

Haven't thought this out all the way through, but now would be a good time for an aggressive humanitarian movement to combat the death cults, the rise of AI, and otherwise anti-life impulses coursing through our politics and society.

I'm upping my p(bloom) It is fall and the season for asters and goldenrods is almost upon us. Meanwhile, enjoy Claire Curtis mums and orange coneflower from last week.
A top-down view of part of my garden. On the left are the mums, with slender pink petals and yellow centers; on the right are the orange coneflowers, aka brown-eyed susans, with short fat yellow petals and black centers. Around them are sprays of goldenrod buds and the single buds of New England asters.

Kākāpō population has grown from 51 in 1995 to 325 this month! It's been tons of work from people in the field, vet offices, etc., but the long-term outlook is good - they can now start transitioning to more natural, less intensive conservation strategies. www.doc.govt.nz/news/media-r...

Yep, Charlie is a Hahn's! We've had him since he was a baby in 1991. These little macaws always think they're about five times as big as they really are - so much attitude! Conures are great. IIRC, they're the closest genetic relatives of the macaws.

Imagine you're shrunk down to amoeba size & could observe a tiny plant root under the soil. The first thing you might notice is that the root isn't all plant cells. Both inside & outside the root are symbiotic fungal cells (grey in photo) in close association, working together. (🔬:Eye of Science)
It looks like giant dried cells with visible cell walls in brown and yellow, with green phloem tissue, but the grey stuff, which looks all sort of wispy and tangled, are the fungal cells that are in partnership.

She's an African grey, but yes. Absolutely. She's lived with us for years, always has chewing/shredding material in her cage, and last week - for the first time ever - she quietly waddled into our kitchen and began splintering our nice cherrywood cabinets. WHY

Brewster's Woods Wildlife Sanctuary, in Concord, MA. This was my first time at this out-of-the-way, modest little Audubon sanctuary. (Most people in Concord go to Walden, Estabrook, Old North Bridge, etc.) I didn't see a single other human. Also, wolf trees are SO COOL. Must have been pasture once!

I inherited my dad's 1969 Alfa Romeo. Because he loved it, I brought it home, had it overhauled, learned to drive it. And discovered that it wasn't as fun as I'd hoped. I gave myself permission to sell it to a collector. I think Dad would have been fine with my choice, but *I* had to get over it.

We once hit the jackpot by persuading a longterm ecological study of urban/suburban yards to include ours as an observation site. We got SO MUCH DATA from that team, it was hilarious. (Did get above 200 species! But in Ecoregion 59, that's not super hard. Not like *desert.*)
