They're also almost always about women and queer people in left-leaning spaces, which says whom we reflexively think of as toxic or annoying. I guarantee some fantasy football league is falling apart over some petty asshole, but he doesn't become a symbol for the annoying left. He can just be Jeff.

Panel 11: Audrey's head happily pops out of the water, sending little droplets flying and reflecting the moonlight. "This was something aquatic," Val narrates, "Gentle. Curious. Unhurt."

Panel 12: Audrey's eyes sparkle as he notices a rubber duck floating around in the pool with him. It has round glasses, making it look kinda like Val. "Or maybe not unhurt," Val continues narrating, "but..."

Panel 13: Audrey picks up the rubber duck, smiling and inspecting it curiously.

Panel 14: Audrey holds up the rubber duck above his head so that Val can see it, big smile beaming. Behind him is an almost magical, chromatic sky filled with red, yellow, green, and blue stars, galaxies, and a huge moon. All of these elements are also reflected in the rippling pool, making it look like a paint-filled art easel. "Not defined by hurt," thinks Val.

...no matter what happens this election, trans-exclusionary Dems will use it to keep trying to purge trans ppl, unless other cis Dems push back & let them know this is unacceptable! CALL THEM DIVISIVE, AS THEY ARE TRYING TO SHRINK THE ANTI-MAGA COALITION juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...
screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
In my opinion, this is the very worst part of all this: If Talarico, Turek, et al. lose their elections, cis Democratic pundits and consultants will inevitably blame the loss on trans people (just as they did with Harris’s election) no matter how we vote, and they will use it as an excuse to throw us under the bus during the next round of elections. Alternatively, if Talarico, Turek, et al. win their elections, these same dipshit cis Democratic pundits and consultants will use those wins as supposed evidence that “moderating on trans issues” (read: rescinding trans rights) is a politically sound strategy.
Like I said, Democrats have a cisgender problem. And we’re going to go through cycle after cycle after cycle of this until either 1) Republicans stop demonizing trans people (which I don’t see happening any time soon), 2) cis Democrats purge transphobic and trans-exclusionary candidates from their ranks (my preferred option and also best for the party in the long run), or 3) cis Democrats allow transphobic and trans-exclusionary politicians and pundits to flourish and purge trans people from the party (in which case, I hope you enjoy your smaller coalition).

'attack a minority who typically vote for us, piss off our own base, & just hope we attract more voters across the aisle than we lose' is a risky galaxy-brain tactic to try when there's 'record high fuel prices' sitting right there. but they know this, of course. they simply don't want progress

the republicans are wide open on several fronts, historically unpopular president, unpopular war, record high gas. any dem throwing trans people under the bus at this moment is doing it because they want to. not like they need to, do they. even if it worked as a vote winner, which it doesn't

this is something I've been wondering too. while I have no evidence of coordination, it's definitely suspicious that so many Dem candidates not only waited until after the primaries to come out with anti-trans positions, but all did so within a week of each other

It’s very simple and it’s been said over and over but I guess it needs saying continuously: if you deem one group too small to have equal rights you are enabling fascism, not fighting it. The people saying Dems are GREAT on trans rights are not paying attention and/or saying stuff like this.
Nichole Hiltz
The Democrats defend the Kennedy Center but not trans people.
A building.

@treewarrior.bsky....
maybe because defending everything about a super small minority of the population is not worth losing to fascists

where do they find these dumb motherfuckers to speak for all of us
That is why I don’t believe equality requires squeezing every transgender person perfectly into one of two boxes.

Sometimes inclusion means recognizing difference without turning that difference into inferiority.

Forcing transgender people into either the men’s or women’s box can erase something important about us.

That is why I want a third category.

To be clear: this slogan had never earned the GOP a single vote they weren't already getting. What these ads are very effective at, however, is convincing dunce liberals and coward centrists that the ads are converting 1000000s of votes and require Dem candidates to abandon lgbtq people.

It is the Democrats who decide whether trans people are going to be fighting Democrats or fighting Republicans. I think most of us would much *rather* fight Republicans. All Democrats have to do to make that happen is *not talk*. That's easy. Democrats are *very* good at not taking policy positions.

So when a Dem says they agree with any of this, they are taking a position that is against what trans people ALREADY HAD just 5 years ago. That's why trans people won't accept it. It's not about progress, it's about preventing a managed decline in civil rights agreed to by Democrats.

So when libs say, you need to do incremental progress like gay marriage, it completely ignores the rollbacks that have happened in 5 years. It is every aspect of trans life from where we use the bathroom, how we are addressed, what our IDs say, to even censorship on discussions about our existence.

Again, 5 years ago, none of these policies existed. 15 states require the forced outing of trans students 16 states ban medicaid coverage of gender affirming care 14 states have "Don't say trans" laws banning discussion of trans people's identities. 29 states have banned participation in sports.
