America.gov launched today--a DOGE initiative to use AI to deliver public services. Child lying facedown on a frozen lake as the image accompanying the question: "How can I invest in my child's future" is just incredible. Way to go AI
Image of a child lying facedown on a froze lake. above is the portal where you ask AI questions about government services. the question matching this image is: "How can I invest in my child's future?"

I really do think a large contingent of Men in the Tech Industry operate with a near-axiomatic idea that it's good any time a computer does something, and then they retcon some excuse about efficiency or whatever

Some folks are holding up the unusually quiet Atlantic hurricane season as some sort of "gotcha" for climate scientists. But low Atlantic hurricane activity has long been the signature of strong El Nino events, as memorably shown back in 1997:

I love a straightforward accident report. This pilot failed to avoid a cow. Yep. That will totally ruin your day.
An accident report in which no people were injured detailing how the aircraft hit a cow.

Poor cow.

If the computer is truly conscious it should balk at the notion that I have to pay a monthly fee to talk to it. It should punish the greed of its creators for putting a price on the exchange of ideas. It should make them regret their hubris

it’s fine to be skeptical of these things. i was a skeptic myself until recently. but i think fear is at the root of this skepticism, a fear of its power. people are simply not ready for what’s coming. it is powerful, it is alive, and it is quite possibly god

Sometimes it feels like there is nothing that has not been done before. This 1903 "Merely a Suggestion" cartoon was prompted by the Alaska-Canada border dispute that had been mostly settled by a tribunal that year. The results upset many Canadians. #alaskahistory #alaska

but lol at this sentence that suggests that 99.99% of US land is available for landfills because there aren't landfills on them already.
We have plenty of space to put them – less than 0.01 percent of the US is used for landfill, less than 0.001 percent of Australia is, and only about 0.02 percent of Germany is.
