The article and the framing is such a clear sign that fully-throated pro high-speed rail outside/grassroots advocacy is desperately needed in California. @movecalifornia.bsky.social & @transbaycoalitiocalmatters.org are stepping up to fill that void calmatters.org/politics/202... (1/2)

California’s high-speed rail authority made a legislative wishlist. It mostly stalled out
California’s bullet train agency said timely construction of the rail line depended on these reforms. They mostly failed.

We’re launching a bold plan to make high-speed rail the fastest, more sustainable way to travel across Europe by 2040. It’s a concrete timeline to remove bottlenecks, unlock investment, and harmonise rail systems ⬇️
A map of Europe titled “High-speed rail plan” showing future high-speed train connections and travel times. Green lines represent future new connections, and magenta lines represent future train travel times. Major cities are marked with circles and connected by these lines. Examples of travel times include: Lisbon–Madrid (3h), Paris–Brussels (1h15), Paris–Rome (6h), Berlin–Warsaw (4h15), Berlin–Prague (2h30), Berlin–Vienna (4h30), Berlin–Budapest (6h15), Berlin–Stockholm (4h), Riga–Tallinn (1h45), Vilnius–Riga (2h), Sofia–Athens (6h). The map includes the EC logo in the bottom right corner.

Reports indicate federal funding for bike lanes may soon be frozen. As the grassroots advocacy organization for safer, better biking, we know these cuts will make our roads less safe for everyone.
Text ID: League of American Bicyclists’ Statement on DOT Freeze of Discretionary Grants and Cooperative Agreements

Halting work on these safety projects will only hurt communities. Whether bike lanes for commuters or making kids’ routes to school safer, these federal funds are common sense investments in safety for everyone in the community. These grants aren’t ideological, they are based on the local priorities for safer streets. In Arkansas, this will put an end to nearly $176 million dollars in economic investments in road safety. In Mississippi, there are $115 million dollars in the balance. People in these communities want these projects, and the states applied for these grants to better serve their citizens. The administration should enable these states and communities to do the work to make their roads and streets safer and better for everyone.

I have written a short statement responding to mass firings today of #NOAA / National Weather Service (#NWS) staff (which were concentrated among recent hires as well as highly experienced staff who had recently been promoted). Please see below screenshot & below for full text.
Statement begins:
The mass firing of both new hires and recently promoted senior staff within NOAA, including mission-critical and life-saving roles at the National Weather Service (NWS), is profoundly alarming. It appears that NOAA staff fired today include meteorologists, data and computer scientists responsible for maintaining and upgrading weather predictive models, and technicians responsible for maintaining the nation’s weather instrumentation network (among many others).

Housed within NOAA, the U.S. NWS is a truly world-class meteorological predictive service, perhaps singularly so. Its cost of operation is only ~$3-4/yr per taxpayer—equivalent to a single cup of coffee—and yields a truly remarkable return on investment (at least 10 to 1, and perhaps 100 to 1, depending on methods of estimation). NOAA and the NWS collectively offer tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year in net economic benefit through a combination of averted losses and efficiencies gained....
