I think that one of the most important messages that candidates like Ossoff communicate when they openly condemn neo-Nazis and white supremacists is “I’m confident that I can win without the support of people who think I’m out of line here.”

Margaret Hamilton, the software engineer whose team developed the onboard flight software for the Apollo space missions, died on September 30. She was 90. bit.ly/4hBWiL5
A person stands smiling, holding a large, stacked pile of paper as tall as them, representing software code, next to a chalkboard. Text below reads: " 1936–2026 Margaret Hamilton, who coined ‘software engineering’ and helped NASA land on the moon, has died. In 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her pioneering work."

This is a very good piece. It's also gotten me thinking about something: the rise of gambling (sorry, "event contracts") in the US coincides with AI use; at the same time, but I also wonder if there's causality either way, a common cause, etc. thelastsoftwareengineer.substack.com/p/slot-machi...

Comet Siding Spring Seen Next to Mars - From Goddard Space Flight Center - flic.kr/p/oQBUMc
This composite NASA Hubble Space Telescope Image captures the positions of comet Siding Spring and Mars in a never-before-seen close passage of a comet by the Red Planet, which happened at 2:28 p.m. EDT October 19, 2014. The comet passed by Mars at approximately 87,000 miles (about one-third of the distance between Earth and the Moon). At that time, the comet and Mars were approximately 149 million miles from Earth.

The comet image shown here is a composite of Hubble exposures taken between Oct. 18, 8:06 a.m. EDT to Oct. 19, 11:17 p.m. EDT. Hubble took a separate photograph of Mars at 10:37 p.m. EDT on Oct. 18.

The Mars and comet images have been added together to create a single picture to illustrate the angular separation, or distance, between the comet and Mars at closest approach. The separation is approximately 1.5 arc minutes, or one-twentieth of the angular diameter of the full Moon. The background starfield in this composite image is synthesized from ground-based telescope data provided by the Palomar Digital Sky Survey, which has been reprocessed to approximate Hubble’s resolution. The solid icy comet nucleus is too small to be resolved in the Hubble picture. The comet’s bright coma, a diffuse cloud of dust enshrouding the nucleus, and a dusty tail, are clearly visible.

This is a composite image because a single exposure of the stellar background, comet Siding Spring, and Mars would be problematic. Mars is actually 10,000 times brighter than the comet, and so c...

Rutgers School of Engineering canceled a commencement speech by Rami Elghandour—an alum and executive producer of an Oscar-nominated film about Hind Rajab, a Palestinian child killed by Israel—because "some" students complained: www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026... His response (via X):
Statement from Rami Elghandour on Rutgers Speech Cancellation
Rutgers first gave me the honor of being the convocation speaker for this year's engineering graduation.
They've now given me an even greater honor.
After a "few" students complained about my selection as speaker because of my social media advocacy for Palestine, Rutgers has canceled my speech. They decided that the feelings of a handful of students who said that my social media posts "opposed their beliefs", were more important than the experience of the entire graduating class, the reputation of the school, the dignity and belonging of Arab and Muslim students, and the First Amendment.
I have not and will not waver on my principles. I stand by my commitment to human rights and American democracy. Only those who fear the truth leverage institutional power to silence it.
Rutgers chose me in part because of my humanitarian work. They put my role as an executive producer for the Oscar nominated The Voice of Hind Rajab front and center. They led with my social justice advocacy. Until it was inconvenient. That's the difference between virtue signaling and principles. One withstands challenge. The other wilts in the slightest breeze.
The message Rutgers is sending to this class and everyone around the country is alarming. Don't dare stand for anything. Don't dare speak up. There will be consequences for being a humanitarian. For advocating for social justice and equality. Avoid people and ideas that contradict your own. Cancel them if you can.
I love Rutgers and it's both heartbreaking and disappointing to see it abandon its students and its ideals.
Ironically the essence of my convocation speech is being yourself and choosing kindness. That you can build a life consistent with your values. That you don't have to choose between success and principles. Rutgers' leadership clearly does not believe in these values.
But they can't stop me from sharing them. I'm recording my speech and will post it soon.

Reminder that Florida voters passed a Constitutional amendment in 2010 banning gerrymandering with 62% of the vote and the Florida GOP just stole the courts and ignored it. By contrast retaliatory gerrymanders in CA and VA passed with the approval of voters. Yet media portrays them as equivalent.
