A grid of nine albums in the following order: Hall &Oates, rock and soul, volume one; Beatles, revolver; meatloaf, bat out of hell; they might be giants, Lincoln; the clash, give ‘em enough rope; Bob Dylan, blood on the tracks; public enemy, fear of a black planet; Dusty Springfield, dusty in Memphis; The New Pornographers, electric version.

I am so tired of Jonestown being a stock reference for “haha, you’re in a cult.” 918 people died, most against their will, and still it has become shorthand for how stupid you think someone is. It's the McDonald's hot coffee incident of mass death — universally referenced, entirely misremembered.

I keep seeing this Semafor graph that seems to show the Trump administration’s effect on international visits is comparable to the pandemic. My first thought was “that can’t be true” and indeed it is not. This is monthly data. We only have to Jun/Aug 2026. The lines are over-fitted to the months.

Leftish antagonism towards liberals well predates the internet. Phil Ochs sang "Love Me I'm A Liberal" in 1966. 85% of declaring you're a leftist rather than a liberal is still the political equivalent of not wanting to be seen at the mall with your mom, but that's not new either.

A wonderful video essay that I imagine I'll assign in future classes. I'd love to see a follow-up about how the final girl is used in Camp Miasma as well. Kris doesn't just identify with Little Death, but also LD's victims. The complexity of desiring both felt especially generative to me.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Just hanging out and doing something helpful. We made up all this other shit and it’s making everyone miserable, bc there’s no finish line.

There's a foreboding sense of cultural death in 1981 Doonesbury. America is repudiating everything Garry's stood for while getting nothing in exchange. It's pervasive in a way that's hard to clip, but here's a little montage.
1981/4/18

[Walden College Reunion]
Alum 1: ...and then last year I finally got fed up. I quit the school board and started a local chapter of the Moral Majority!
/
Alum 2: The Moral Majority? You mean the folks who say God wants a bigger defense budget?
Alum 1: It’s true. The Bible supports US Military Supremacy.
/
Alum 2: Gee, I’m not so sure I go along with you on that one. But, hey, to each his own, right? That’s what this country’s all about!
/
Alum 2: Well, great seeing you again, buddy..
Alum 1: May you burn in Hell for all eternity.1981/2/15

[WBBY Studios]
Mark: Tonight we’re pleased to welcome to the show Miss Muffy Harkness, lead singer for the hot new preppy band “Muffy and the Top-Siders.”
/
Mark: Muffy’s been making the rounds to chat up her debut album “Cotillion.” So tell us, Muffy, what’s Ruling-Class Rock all about?
Muffy: Well, basically, it’s the sensible sound, Mar. Just really neat, really key music.
/
Muffy: Not that Prep Pop isn’t a hoot as well. Au contraire! Some of our songs are such a stitch it’s not funny! It’s just we’re trying to stay away from the usual tacky [black] stuff.
/
Mark: But isn’t the prep movement limiting it’s appeal by suggesting that elitism and privilege have become hip?
Muffy: Maybe. But the political climate is just so right for that, don’t you think?
/
Muffy: I mean, look at the new crowd in Washington. From George Bush on down, there’s loads of Old Money. I think people have had enough of New Money. New Money is almost as bad as poverty!
/
Mark: Except to the poor, of course.
Muffy: Really. Of course most of them are too declasse to notice, n’est-ce pas?1981/3/23-25

[ABC Nightly News]
Hedley: Good evening. Today the furor continued over President Reagan’s recent statement that the only lesson of Vietnam was to “never enter into a war you don’t intend to win.”
/
Hedley: With the memory of 210,000 US casualties still vivid, millions of shocked Americans expressed outrage over the disclosure that their government never had any intention of winning the Vietnam War.
/
Hedley: I’m Roland Hedley. As cries of “Never Again” ring out across the country tonight, join me as we take a look into our own front yard… for a war we can win!
/
[Map of El Salvador serving as the title card for “One For The Gipper: 1981-?”]
Hedley: Brought to you by Hertz, where the winners rent..

[skipping the middle comic cause it puts me over the alt-text limit and it's the one I'm least interested in highlighting]

Hedley: Whether the US meant to win the Vietnam War or not, today there is growing pressure to find a war we can win. US strategist Abe Levin explains how El Salvador was selected.
/
Levin: It wasn’t easy. We’d been looking for a place to draw the line for weeks, but there just weren’t any civil wars on the front page. Finally, some guy in research hit on El Salvador.
/
Levin: It was perfect. Small, close to home, and the right side was already winning. We hit it hard. Within days, we’d turned El Salvador into a metaphor for the geopolitical struggle between the superpowers!
/
Hedley: And the Russians agreed with your choice?
Levin: Well, no, they wanted some Persian gulf state, but we put our foot down

[transcriber's note: ouch]1981/4/24

[Duke and NRA executive Springfield talking at a bar in DC]
Duke: Things must be a little hot in your shop since the shooting, eh, Springfield?
Springfield: On the contrary, Duke, things have never been quieter.
/
Springfield: Oh, for a few days we took a lot of editorial flak, but basically it’s become a foregone conclusion that you can’t beat the NRA and the Gun Lobby.
/
Springfield: Consequently, nobody in Congress wants to stick his neck out, and no bills get passed. We end up looking stronger than ever. Even though we haven’t made a single phone call!
/
Duke: At last! The perfect lobby!
Springfield: I’m afraid so. We’re probably going to have to let some of our people go

we were in line at the bakery with our eye on a salted plum frangipane. It was the last one, and the woman in front of us grabbed it. I'd known we were doomed as soon as I spoke the words aloud. But then she offered to split it with us! We declined, but that was a very cool move. Defend society
