I think it's closer to the truth that LLMs *can* save time on *some tasks* which can be valuable *if* you monitor them and check their output. But that doesn't get you a trillion dollars so they have to squint into the middle distance and say stupid sci fi bullshit instead

the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

I have nothing but aversion to frat culture, but given the uphill battle of banning them, a proposal: No frat houses. You can have the fraternal order, but you can only congregate en mass in public places. Book a large campus space for meetings and so forth.

For most Americans, car transport has been solved. Honda Civic and Accord, Toyota Corrolla and Camry. Big family? Get a Sienna minivan. Unless you work in construction, you don't need, and probably cannot afford anything else. Need a truck for a weekend? Just rent one!

I knew a few where it has really worked out, but interestingly, even speaking to friends, they are not particularly talkative about it. But I will say by far, in most of the successful open couples I know, one or both partners are bisexual....

No two words send AI industry advocates into fits of rage more than "stochastic parrots." The question is: Why? Why do they get so worked up over this particular critical framework time and time again? I sat down with @emilymbender.bsky.social, one of the coauthors of the original paper, to discuss

I talk with computational linguist Emily M. Bender, co-author of the influential 2021 “stochastic parrots” paper, about why AI industry leaders can’t stop seething over the term.

Yeah, I think 99% of the time, a great work of art manifests in spite of the creator, and that's just considering solo/small group creation like writing a book or a song. I assume it's an order of magnitude more difficult when it comes to movies. Creators often understand their art the least.

I wouldn't give a solitary, unarmed human great odds against any large and hungry or angry (or horny) land animal. But it turns out 30 of us with pointy sticks, stones, shovels, and, you know, language can absolutely terrorize everything else.

Open to updating of course! Main thing was to point out the assumption that progress will inevitably be made, often citing AI itself, is not a safe one at all. SeriousQ: Has anyone flipped on the OpenAI conclusion that hallucinations cannot be 100% eliminated? Or just assuming asymptotic approach?

That desperate need to know more is what fires the imagination and keeps you thinking about the story and, once upon a time, sent you back to the theater. Seems like a lot of people now find that feeling intolerable?

I don't have the time to do this, but I suspect that if you developed the right framework and analyzed enough films, you'd find a revealed preference for films that show more than tell, and show less than they could. Not sure my theory that ending stories sooner holds up post Marvel ...

remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

You see some of this step skipping even in non-rationalist AI supporters. If you bring up the apparent diminishing returns on dataset inputs, intractability of hallucinations, or any other limitation, they assume "they'll figure it out though." How? Usually through "AI."
