I’ve been upset about this for hours. Do they mean Old English? Which ended in the 11th century? Is he adapting it to sound like Beowulf? This play published in Early Modern English in 1597? Do they mean Olde English, the malt liquor? Old English, the floor cleaner? Are words real anymore?

A fancy provost allegedly using AI to write papers and op-eds is a big problem, but a bigger problem is why we all have no problem believing a fancy provost used AI write papers and op-eds. I should find that hard to believe. I don’t.

If you think of "hiring in entry level positions" as "procuring labor to do the tasks entry level people do" then you probably do think AI is a magical headcount reduction machine. But the point of hiring in entry level positions is to produce mid-career employees.

That pro-Notre Dame call by ACC refs—Notre Dame is in the ACC for most sports—is the reason folks think college football is rigged and becoming meaningless. Western Michigan got robbed. Wisconsin got robbed. The higher-ranked team always gets the call. I can't take much more.

Perry: Republicans fought ‘indoctrination.’ Now they’re telling students what to study.
The conservative attack on higher education in states like Iowa is hard to watch. But it also provides an opportunity for blue states like Minnesota.

Capturing one of my #WITM reads before August ends. Fragmentary narrative infused with historical context. Highlighted for me the similar endings of large scale psychiatric institutionalization internationally in the late 20th century.

A poster for a talk I’m giving. Key info from the poster is as follows:

FUTURE-PROOFING THE PAST: A POLITICAL ECONOMY OF
THE HUMANITIES WITHOUT AI
Humanities Week Keynote Lecture
with Dr. Sonja Drimmer, UMass Amherst
Thursday, October 8
4-5:30 PM
Helmerich Browsing Room
OSU Library
Why has Google invested so much in
art museums? What is OpenAI doing
in its partnerships with academic
libraries and archives? How has it
become popular for tech CEOs to
author manifestos in the guise of
historical treatises?
This talk offers an account of how
the political project of inserting
artifical intelligence into every civic
institution has depended, and
continues to depend, on the
technology industry's exploitation of
history.
Dr. Sonja Drimmer is Associate
Professor of the History of Art &
Architecture at the University of
Massachusetts, Amherst. Her research
interests include premodern notions of
authorship and authority, media
theory, book history, and the
aesthetics and material culture of
politics. She is the 2026-2027 W. Ford
Schumann Distinguished Visiting
Professor in Democratic Studies at
Williams College.

You have to understand the cultural context of the original and the culture of your intended audience. You have to understand the feelings that are intended to be inspired as well as the meaning of the words. Translating a long work means understanding the whole as well as the parts.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.
