What's behind this tidal wave of epidemics? In the largest study ever conducted on emerging infectious diseases, we show that the popular explanation - "our relationship with nature is out of balance" - doesn't hold up. Out now in Nature, after half a decade of work: www.nature.com/articles/s41...

A man says "I see you started wearing a chef's hat." The man in the toque blanche says "yeah, I'm working on a new bit called 'The Chef.' The first man asks "what's the chef's whole deal?" The Chef answers "mainly, he's confident in a way I'm not. The Chef points to two guys passing by and says "hey! you guys feel good about yourselves." The two guys say "yes, chef." One of the guys says "man, I love the Chef." The other one says "yeah, he's always cookin'."

New publication in Environmental Research Letters: overshooting 1.5°C then cooling back down does not undo the damage. We map where, for whom, and through what mechanisms temporary overshoot becomes permanent loss. Paper (OA): iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... 1/12
"Three stacked panels sharing a time axis. Top: global temperature rises past 1.5°C, peaks, then declines (the overshoot pathway), with a flat permanent-exceedance line at the peak for comparison. Middle: biophysical responses to the same trajectory diverge; some track temperature down, some recover with a lag, one keeps intensifying. Bottom: socioeconomic impacts of the same biophysical change diverge by adaptive capacity; high-capacity systems recover, while one crosses a dashed adaptive-capacity threshold and never recovers: the permanent overshoot legacy.

9/12 Two issues to reflect on. First, a feasibility feedback loop: the deeper the overshoot, the more it erodes the finance, institutions and land needed for the carbon removal that ends it.
