I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them

The people who are saying shit like "well it's either this or the borders are totally open" are doing their best to convince America that we should have completely open borders.

Honestly, I think Obama might be a top five president in hindsight simply because it turned out this country was a shithole powderkeg and he managed to ride the tiger for eight years somehow. Last Roman type of thing.

The Secretary of Homeland Security is asserting that the Deputy White House Chief of Staff ultimately bears responsibility for the murder of two American citizens, which is something that would normally generate a dozen congressional inquiries.

While glad to see Bovino humbled, I really don’t have any higher opinion of Homan—a cruel, cold, corrupt, calculating bureaucrat who’s devoted more of his career to mass deportation than almost anyone. He’s the architect of child separation.

After the Boston Massacre, the soldiers responsible were arrested and received fair trials. King George recalled the regiment to England, and then American leaders were like “good, that was enough, we’ll remain your loyal subjects forever…” wait, that’s not right…

Incredible paragraph in Robert F. Worth's excellent reporting from Minneapolis: www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...
Text that says: Inside the schools, many administrators have been making their own preparations over the past year. Amanda Bauer, a teacher at a Minneapolis elementary school that has a large portion of immigrant students, told me that administrators informed parents last fall about their emergency plans for ICE raids by phone or in person, because they were already concerned about leaving email chains that could be mined by a hostile government.

We don’t have a federal system, where state govt’s have separate sovereign powers, so that the governors of those states can plead with the President to call off his death squads. Extrajudicial killing is simply murder. Murder is a crime in Minnesota. The State of Minnesota can—MUST—address it.

This is why I always emphasize that "the media just likes Trump for clicks and ratings" is not accurate. The Jeffrey Epstein scandal is the worst in political history and instead of sensationalizing it, they repeatedly minimize it and downplay it despite massive public interest

An underrated factor in "why don't people in wealthy societies have more kids" is changing societal norms that now expect even older kids to be chaperoned by an adult any time they are in public, and to be chauffeured by a parent as their only means of transportation

I think this is one those things historians understand intuitively and a lot of non-historians struggle with. Research isn’t just about answering a question, it’s about framing a question. This is what we argue about! Wrestle with. Cry over. Drink away. Not how to answer, but what question to ask.

Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.* The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.

One thing that is clear from the kicker to this excellent WSJ story on the WH ballroom is that Trump himself can't believe how easy it is to run roughshod over rules and traditions. There's probably a metaphor in there somewhere. Free link: www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
The president himself has marveled at his own ability to move forward, telling donors to the ballroom about a conversation he had with officials involved with the project.

“They said, ‘Sir, you can start tonight,’ ” Trump recalled during a recent dinner at the White House. “I said, ‘What are you talking about?’

“ ‘You have zero zoning conditions. You’re the president.’

“I said, ‘You got to be kidding.’ ”
