Book cover: THE GENUS RUSSULA

in Great Britain with keys to species

Russula claroflava Grove.

[claroflava with a clear yellow colour]

Syn. R. flavorubescens

Cap a bright, clear yellow, lemon-yellow, gold-yellow without

olivaceous tones.

Gills moderately crowded, broad, ivory-white then cream-ochre, bruising and aging grey-black especially on the edges. Stem cylindric-clavate, white, sometimes briefly tuming red when scratched before tuming slowly grey-black.

Taste mild.

Odour nil

Macrochemicals FeSO4 pale pink, guaiac very slowly and weakly blue (+), formalin bright orange-red.

Habitat common throughout Britain in wet areas under Betula

Pileocystidia absent.

Fuchsinophile hyphae numerous, long, slender, 4.5-6 pm, with prominent external encrustations.

Spores 8.0-9.6 x 6.4-7.8 µm, warts to 0.6 pm, mostly iso-lated with the occasional connective.

Spore deposit dark ochre (IIIc).

fuchsinophile hyphae

Ilic

NOTES

A beautiful species growing in Betula woods, in damp glades, bogs and moors. The richness of its vivid yellow cap has been compared to lemons, egg yolks, butter, chrome or cadmium-yellow. However it is described it has a rather restricted tonal range and does not vary that much. It is common throughout Britain, wherever there is boggy ground and Betula, Along with the striking yellow of its cap and habitat, all parts blacken when damaged or with age. These three features alone are usually sufficient for a correct identification. A totally mild species, it has ochre spores around IIIe. Microscopically it lacks pileocystidia but has instead fuchsinophile hyphae. It has averaged-sized slightly ellipsoid to ovoid spores, with isolated warts and some connate ridges. Rately, specimens may first turn bright red when scratched before blackening.
