Tall Rocket on recently cleared sand dune at Par Sands, Cornwall today. See ALT for evidence of its long-lived seed. Sisymbrium altissimum

Recorded here in 1901, 1910, then 1929 and nothing until 2025 when the dunes were cleared of scrub back to bare sand. Hundreds of S. altissimum then appeared evidencing a long-lived seed bank. They'll probably disappear again as the dunes vegetate over.

A white form of Japanese Rose, invasive in the dunes at Par Sands, Cornwall, but it has pretty flowers, so that's OK. 😉 Last photo shows one in fruit. Lots of it has been ripped out of the dunes but it keeps coming back all the more. Rosa rugosa

The known site for Sea Daffodils found a few that had set seed. The seeds are buoyant and can float to new beaches to colonise.Native to France, and now found in a few places in Devon and Cornwall. Par Sands. Pancratium maritimum

As usual in the mild winter climate of Cornwall some weird alien plant has naturalised on a sea wall away from habitation. I believe this is New Zealand Flax. I’ve previously found baby plants in pavements too. Phormium tenax

Two subspecies of Sea Aster from salt marsh on the River Tamar today near Torpoint. One never grows ray petals and the other does. Genetically different too apparently, though they can cross pollinate, so intermediate forms are also likely. #wildflowerhour Tripolium pannonicum

Stone Parsley is a thin and weedy looking plant so it is hard to photograph. The easiest way to ID it, is to crunch it up and smell it. It has a strong odour of petrol/diesel/ antiseptic type smell. #wildflowerhour Sison amomum

A weird plant called Redclaws, Escallonia rubra, lined a field edge neare Torpoint today, so clearly planted. However, it had started to sucker away from the main plants, so likely to spread in the future.

This is a Cyperus of some kind, with AI claiming it is C. eragrostis. However, it doesn't look like any C. eragrostis I've seen before. Is it C. longus? @jo-the-botanist.bsky.social @botanicalmartin.bsky.social might know. Growing a little bit below the high tide mark near Torpoint, 1.5m tall.

There were lots of Long-bracted Sedges along the foreshore near Torpoint, Cornwall today. Open up the 2nd photo to view it full size to see the humungus bract on this plant, which was not easy to photograph! A classic sedge of the coast where saltwater has an influence. Carex extensa

It's time for coastal Atriplex again, a visit to the Torpoint area in Cornwall revealed this hybrid below, between Long-stalked and Spear-leaved Oraches and closer to the sea, I found the hybrid between Long-stalked and Babbington's Oraches (A. x taschereauii). A. x gustafssoniana
