Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

It's much easier for a bunch of bikes to clear out of the way then cars and trucks. Congestion pricing continues to be a slam dunk policy win.
Underlying these improvements were substantial changes in traffic patterns near the boundary of the congestion pricing zone. Passenger vehicle density fell by approximately 21 percent and truck density by 18 percent, while pedestrian and bicycle density rose by roughly 14 percent and 20 percent, respectively. The EMS improvements emerged quickly after implementation and were concentrated spatially near the 60th Street boundary, with little evidence that congestion—or its associated costs to emergency response—simply shifted to nearby areas outside the CRZ.

Frustrated by inaction on the threat of cars on their street, the 1970s residents of Delft's Tuinstraat illicitly erected barriers to curb traffic. This act of rebellion became a global revolution—inventing the woonerf (“living street”): a common space for recreation, vegetation, and socialization.
A before and after image of a residential steeet in Delft. The before is a paved space dominated by car traffic. The after a lush garden space populated by trees and planters.

Graphic reading, “The difference between ‘There used to be hot summers too.’ and climate crisis.” Below is a temperature-anomaly chart showing mostly blue, cooler-than-average years in the earlier record, shifting dramatically toward sustained red, warmer-than-average years in recent decades. Occasional earlier red bars are labelled “These were hot summers,” while the sustained cluster of increasingly warm recent years is labelled “This is climate change.”
