We do underpay politicians at local government level and I can confirm the "laws" there (motions to council, policies etc) are not any smarter for it. He's right about teachers though. "Schools should be Palaces".

The County division covers a larger area. Amber Valley Greens are stronger in the Eastern half of the division, which is a separate ward (called Smalley, Shipley & Horsley Woodhouse) that they have held since 2023. So it's not a like for like comparison. mapit.mysociety.org/area/166837....

For the first time since May 2025, First Past the Post is consistently harming Reform UK. Between May 2025 and May 2026, Reform won 37% of seats on 29% of the vote. Since May, they've won just 22% of seats despite only falling to 25% of the vote.

But we'd need a functional disciplinary process for that to happen. Same old.

Yes I agree. I don't think the solution to that problem is to say it's not ok to have a genuine, difficult debate about the circumstances around and consequences of Israel's founding. I think the solution is to chuck out people who are being abusive and/or antisemitic.

I know, and I agree but I also don't think there's an easy answer to the dilemma of how do you have "checks and balances" without introducing really bad gatekeeping and top-down problems, vs you can't just assume everyone will choose to seek consensus.

A year ago I thought arguing about whether Gaza was technically a Genocide or not was bad tactics and detracted from pointing out the blatant war crimes and huge death toll, etc. I think I was wrong about that and I wonder if my instinctive fear about the debate we're about to have is wrong too?

(And ideally not tank the party and not make it feel like an unsafe place for Jewish members). It's going to be a painful process. But it also would have been a painful process if the motion had fallen.

I'm not claiming to be remotely qualified to contribute to that discussion, but I think it's important to have it and I want to hear it, and I want it to happen in the general discourse. I just hope we can work out how to do that and protect Jewish people from antisemitism at the same time.
200
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
However, I think there's a good argument that (legit) concerns around antisemitism have had the unintended consequence of preventing a full acknowledgement of the historical injustices fairly mainstream Zionist views have resulted in, & a clear acknowledgement of the principles Israel is founded on.

Yes. Obviously my fear is the net result of this will be fewer Greens elected and therefore less ability to effectively advocate for Palestinians (and for action on the climate emergency and tackling inequality and protecting trans rights and all the rest). 1/x

I'm very willing to discuss specific concepts (as time allows), but it'd help to acknowledge that many people in the Green Party are intimately familiar with Labour's internal processes and some of the way we do things is a conscious attempt to avoid the fundamental problems in the Labour approach.

I agree there are only so many ways to have memberships vote. None of them are perfect. It's entirely possible to have a very clear idea of what a fence is there for and still come to the conclusion it's doing more harm than good.

James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm not a fan of the way the motion has been worded or the lack of consensus building around it, but it does very clearly define what it means by Zionism, and in my view the people you're describing here wouldn't be Zionists as defined by the motion: bsky.app/profile/jmil...

No, nothing to do with the leadership. Literally a mathematical formula:
Screenshot of an excerpt from the Conference Agenda papers. The key section is as follows:

Following SOCC F1(f) a multiplier is applied to the results of the Prioritisation Ballot to
motions that have appeared at the immediately preceding Conferences. Appearance at the
immediately preceding Conference will multiply the Prioritisation Ballot outcome by 1.5, with an additional 0.5 for each preceding Conference.

"Democracy is the worst form of government, apart from all the others" (I'm not claiming this is actually very democratic for the reasons you point out. But I do think the alternative methods employed by other UK political parties are even worse. Open to new ideas).

For clarity, the motion was brought to conference by a group of ordinary members of the party, and the statement you're referring to was from the party's leadership team and MPs - so two different groups of people. Genuine internal democracy is messy.
121
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
A bloc of 1000 or so people is about half of one per cent of the party membership. One motion at one conference doesn't define our party for ever and this isn't the end of the debate.
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
That is the one part of this I tried to engage with, and yes it was very clear that some people had no interest in attempting to build consensus and just wanted to ram their version through. But even here there are multiple valid perspectives including emphasising the right to resist occupation.

James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
To be clear, I think the current situation is very, very far from optimal. I've heard Palestinian people make a compelling case that it's necessary to acknowledge the "on the ground" reality of Zionism as it's actually played out in their lived experience, too.
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
That I can very much believe 😥
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Yes, but saying "we support this solution" is not the same as saying "everyone who supports a different solution is racist". Presumably you support a two state solution where neither of the states are institutionally racist?
100
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But I'd much rather not be having to make that complex argument, and I think it should have been possible to find a form of words that recognises the fundamentally ethno-nationalist / religious nationalist nature of Israel's founding and current form without having to use the word Zionism at all.
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This is part of my frustration with the motion, tbh. My argument is that the motion defines Zionism in a very specific way. It doesn't follow that anyone (or any organisation describing themselves as Zionist but defining what they mean by that term differently to the motion is racist.
210
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
No it doesn't. It expresses support for a single state solution, which is a legitimate political position, and it effectively declares that anyone supporting a state that engages in the "exclusion and / or domination of the non-Jewish population" is racist.
100
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I agree and I am disappointed it fell. I am trying to give some benefit of the doubt as to why, mostly to try and understand people's different perspectives with a view to how to improve the situation through motions to subsequent conferences in order to provide assurances to Jewish members.
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
You're saying there was an amendment to "deplore attacks on synagogues"? Can you show me where? I'm not happy about the current circumstances, but I'd like there to at least be clarity about what's happened.
000
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
But I can see an argument that: a) we don't expel people simply for disagreeing with a party policy, so it is not necessary to include this in the motion, and b) if the amendment was included, it could be misused by people who were members of very racist groups that call themselves "Zionist". (2/2)
010
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There was no such amendment. Again unhelpful, and in this case outright misinformation. An amendment explicitly preventing Green Party members from being expelled for membership of Jewish organisations that self-define as Zionist was refused. I'm very disappointed about that (1/2)

James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The Prioritisation Ballot helps decide the order of the "E" motions, together with a multiplier for motions that have been held over from previous conferences. ZiR came top of the prioritisation ballot and was heard 2nd after a motion on Domestic Violence that also scored highly on the ballot.
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There are different types of motions (A-Reports, B-Motions from Policy Working Groups, C-Motions that are deemed to have gone through a full consultation process, D-Motions on internal party processes & E-everything else), with conference time given to each type. It was heard 2nd in the "E" section.
210
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
That's really unhelpful. There is (obviously) nothing in this motion that advocates violence towards synagogues of any kind. Many organisations are very explicit in their constitution and/or public statements that they are Zionist. It's a term used (and misused) to cover a broad range of views.
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This is the ideology the motion defines and opposes: “Zionism is a political ideology which called for the creation – and, now it exists, the continuity – of an ethnonationalist Jewish State in historic Palestine to the exclusion and/or domination of the non-Jewish population.”
110
James Milne @jmilnegreen.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It is perfectly possible to be against antisemitism and vote Green. Much of the debate / process around this motion has been far from good but the narrow definition of Zionism the motion provides clearly *is* racist. The party needs to take strong steps to show that antisemitism won't be tolerated.

Haha, best laid plans and all that. But "B" names did even better than "A" names according to this data, so. Tbh I think you just need to change to electing in thirds like sensible councils do, makes most of these issues go away 🙂 (until there are boundary changes and then it's just 😬 )

We can do both. This isn't a presidential election. Andy Burnham will still be PM whatever happens and Reform have no chance in this particular constituency. A closer analogy would be when AOC took on the Democratic Party establishment and won the primary for her New York district.
