Good news! I made the case for banning adverts for high-carbon products back in 2020. It was important then and it’s even more crucial now. Huge respect to @adfreecities.bsky.social for their years of campaigning, and to my @bristolgreenparty.bsky.social council colleagues for making it happen 👏

Screenshot of an Instagram post by Adfree Cities: Bristol bans polluting ads - ads for fossil fuels, SUVs, flights and fast fashion will no longer appear on council-owned sites. Huge result as Bristol council approves ban on ads for fossil fuels and other polluting products and services.

Screenshot of second page of Instagram post by Adfree Cities: In a massive win against polluting advertising, Bristol City Council has introduced restrictions on ads for SUVs, fossil fuels, airlines, cruises and ultra-fast fashion on council-owned and sites. The policy aims to make rim for the promotion of more sustainable forms of transport, travel and holidays.

Really great to see research from @sustainweb.org & Portsmouth uni that confirms what we have been saying to councils: there is no evidence that adopting a healthier advertising policy leads to a reduction in advertising revenue. Read the full report here: www.sustainweb.org/reports/aug2...

We are pleased to see that the Government has banned the sale of energy drinks to under 16s acknowledging the impacts they have on health. However, it is unclear if this will also extend to advertising these unhealthy products, particularly outdoors where these ads can be seen by anyone ☹️

bbc.co.uk

Energy drinks to be banned for under-16s in England from April

It will be illegal to sell high-caffeine beverages to under-16s from April next year, but soft drinks with lower caffeine levels will not be affected.

Great to see a recommendation that "the government should develop new regulation, or updating existing regulation, to ban all outdoor advertising of HFSS foods, to be implemented by July 2027" in the new Health & Social Care Committee report @oha-updates.bsky.social

Brilliant to see that councils are questioning the value of outdoor advertising given the impact on their residents & local communities & are looking for alternatives to reclaim public spaces - we hope that more councils will follow the example of #Sheffield Council #OurSpaceNotAdSpace

Did you know that for every £1 spent on advertising fruit & veg £18 is spent on ads for sweets, snacks, desserts & soft drinks 😱 Add your name to the @sustainweb.org Fed Up campaign to demand that people are protected from harmful food marketing & for healthier food for everyone 🥕

Great to see our comrades @endgamblingads.bsky.social continuing to raise the issue of gambling ads in parliament - When will the government use the 2005 Gambling Act to ban all ads?

Book recommendation! Our Co-Founder Nicola Wilks contributed to this anthology of flash fiction #TheLastPlasticFork (published by @habitatpress.bsky.social) on "green epiphanies". It's a joyful, offbeat collection showing how small interactions and moments can shift mindsets and make a difference.

Tireless work from Sheffield councillor @ruthmersereau.bsky.social fighting planning applications for digital advertising screens. It's hard work - which is why we're working to change the planning rules, to give councils and residents more power to keep these unwanted ad screens off our streets.
