🧪A pleasure to have hosted the first meeting of the Oxford Chromatin Club with @mariekewens.bsky.social yesterday! Great talks from Hoa Vo (Physics) on CMG progression and @joyjoychoi.bsky.social (@oxfordbiochemistry.bsky.social) showing the incredible CryoET work from her new preprint (link below).

I remember a couple of years ago Joy came up to me in the office and asked if I would like to see some nucleosomes. I was blown away then and even more so now! Great to see this amazing work out in the world 😍

Chromatin is dispensable for bacterial life

In addition to being an excellent scientist, @aleksszczurek.bsky.social is an extremely talented watercolour artist. I've finally got this beautiful painting back from the framer and up on the wall in pride of place! The scene is from a photo I took on a rather changeable day in Glenmalure, Ireland.
Watercolour painting depicting an Irish mountain valley with a small river in the foreground and a path leading up into the hills. The clouds have just broken up to reveal a patch of blue sky and light up the sceneWide shot showing the framed painting hanging on a wall above a TV. Trailing houseplants sit on surrounding shelf

Unbelievably, #DuvetKnowItsChristmas generates such good will on social media that over the years we've raised somewhere approaching a quarter of a million quid for homeless charities. If you can spare a bob or two, sling some to Centrepoint, and here's the link: www.gofundme.com/f/duvet-know...

This year I'm hosting Christmas in my 1-bed flat. My brother has inherited last year's airbed setup and I've upgraded to an actual bed! Just a (freezing) 10-minute cycle down the road to my friend's house to get to it... I get to hang out with Imogen though so I'm still happy #DuvetKnowItsChristmas

We have had multiple discussions about why people have not previously observed the very dramatic reduction in transcription upon PNUTS depletion. So I looked at our own TT-seq data and analysed it without including the spike-in. The numbers speak for themselves! Spike-in calibration is important!
