Torres supporters keep defacing my chalk to make it into a pro-Torres message. This is how I responded today when I saw that “Don’t rank Torres” had become “Rank Torres #1 Council D3”…
Portland chalk sidewalk drawing that reads: Rank Kellie Torres #1 if you love tax cuts for the rich… Her GOP mega-donors also support Christine Drazan.

TIL Oregon SNAP does this super cool thing where participating grocery stores, farmer’s markets, and farm stands can get people who use EBT for fruits and veggies get essentially double the purchasing power Super smart!
Get more fruits and veggies at Grocery Stores with Double Up!

Shoppers using their SNAP
(Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program) card earn a $1 to $1 match on purchases of fruit and vegetables at participating grocery stores. For example, if you spend $10 on your Oregon Trail Card on fruit and vegetables, you will earn $10 extra in Double Up Food Bucks to redeem on fruits and vegetables on your next visit.

Double Up Food Bucks are earned through a receipt-printed coupon or customer loyalty account (phone number),and automatic discount that can then be redeemed at your next visit for free fruits and vegetables. Currently, Double Up can only be redeemed at the grocery store where they were earned. Contact your local store to learn more about how to earn and redeem Double Up where you shop.

By the looks of this, maxed out a donation to Kellie Torres too. Republicans see the forest through the trees - we have socially liberal (as long as they’re not poor people) and fiscally conservative politics in Portland. But class consciousness is rising and no one buys that line anymore.

The Pope reminds me of a version of Catholicism I knew growing up as a young man attending anti-war and anti-death penalty protests, where I met elderly Catholics who shared their version of faith with me. I learned that Catholicism was about love and mercy for the weak, the condemned, and the poor.

Andy Beshear has an entire chapter in his new book about backing the LGBTQ community and it's worth a read. He talks about how the anti-trans ads were tested in KY during his election and how vetoing anti-trans legislation didn't hurt his reelection campaign.
However the anti-trans ads had less to do with Kentucky and more to do with the fact that we were in an election. Terry Schilling, the head of the APP, decided to test the ads in our election to determine whether or not the issue could win votes for the Republican Party. Earlier in the summer of 2019, Scholling had partnered with a behavioral science firm to try to find a wedge issue that resonated with suburban voters. That's right. The anti-trans ads did not come out of some firmly held conviction but was a purely political stance. Their research landed on trans athletes, specifically trans women, competing in women's sports. They tested their theory in the 2019 Kentucky gubernatorial general election. Although I won, APP considered their test successful, because their research showed the ads delivered thirteen thousand votes for Trump Lite, which made the race tighter than anticipated. You might hask how, in this political climate, I was reelected after vetoing the anti-trans bill. Because people respect authentic faith. The day I vetoed it, I explained my why. I said I believe all children are children of God and that I don't want people picking on these kids. I then countered their anti-trans ads with commercials talking about good jobs, healthcare, roads and bridges, public education, and public safety. The result? The biggest win of my career. So don't tell me the Democratic Party should stop fighting for the rights of all people. Just explain your authentic why, and then get back to focusing on issues that touch all our lives on a daily basis.

for all the handwringing about city council drama i don’t think this gets emphasized nearly enough
“Our City Council now, for better or worse, is more representative of Portland,” Valdini said. “It doesn’t always make things easier when a lot of different voices are heard in government.”

“But now you have a City Council that is divided and represents the divisions in Portland. I see this as a success story.”
