Congratulations Portland, we did. We just secured the title for Largest Electric Bicycle Ride and Party. With an official count 1060 people on e-bikes (plus more on pedal bikes or riding on an e-bike) we broke Seattle’s record of 405 e-bikes and made Portland history together.
A sea of people line up on SW Naito Parkway wearing helmets and holding their bikes.A person on an e-bike gives a fist bump as they cross the finish line on SW Naito Pkwy.

I'd like to share my editorial for Newsweek that published this morning. I ask mayors across this great nation to continue standing strong and standing together, peacefully, in the face of federal bully tactics against our communities. www.newsweek.com/portland-may...

Today, federal forces deployed heavy waves of chemical munitions impacting a peaceful daytime protest where the vast majority of those present violated no laws, made no threat, and posed no danger to federal forces.

Over the last decade, Portland has faced a dramatic and deadly rise in unsheltered homelessness. This crisis is what drove me to dig deeper: to meet with community partners, to listen to those living on our streets, and to study how other cities responded.

As I have said from the beginning, the number of federal troops needed in our city is zero, and today's court ruling vindicates Portland's position while reaffirming the rule of law that protects our community.

We can’t arrest our way out of homelessness, nor should we. But for too long, we have failed to enforce our existing laws on dangerous activities that hurt the community.

Portland stands for democracy, dignity, and the right to peacefully protest. Our focus is simple and unchanging: we demand transparency, accountability, and community-led solutions, not troops on our streets.

An “accident chain” is a collection of small mistakes or oversights that, together, can lead to an accident, injury or death. As the former CEO of one of North America’s safest freight trucking companies, I’ve learned to see these potential chain-links everywhere. www.newsweek.com/portland-may...
