I'm just going to keep yelling this louder and louder until it clicks: weird overpaid AI nerds hand-wringing about human extinction are trying to distract you from the extremely deadly and serious harms they are causing yesterday, today and tomorrow www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
Headline: "US Data Centers Set to Burn More Natural Gas Than Most Nations" above a photo of natural gas compressor towers, power lines and a crane at an industrial site, illustrating rising gas use tied to data centers.News excerpt reporting that U.S. data centers’ natural gas use is expected to grow by 15 billion cubic feet per day by 2035—amounting to more gas than every country except China, Russia, Iran and the U.S., citing the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

you can tell how obviously flawed this whole debate is by noting how simply stating, in dry terms, what a large language model is — a fuzzy search that gives you fact-agnostic responses to prompts, weighed by likely relation — is enough to make a lot of these centrists foam at the mouth

Everyone keeps saying "AI isn't going away" and no, "AI" as you've come to know it is in fact going to go away. It's unprofitable and the user experience to date has been subsidized. It will never scale, and it's not getting any cheaper. And localized fragments of that tech aren't the same.

I've started to see arguments that we have to get used to AI Slop coding even if it isn't great, because it's fast. Humans could go faster, too, if they're allowed to turn in stuff that only sometimes works. Such a fascinating double standard that will in no way come back to haunt, naw.

"One longtime colleague and friend, [John Ioannidis] who has kept in touch with [Bhattacharya], pleads for scientists—and reporters—to give him a chance. " Ioannidis is part of the COVID contrarian crew. Of course he says that. It's like a Big Oil exec asking to give EPA head Lee Zeldin a chance.
Bhattacharya, who was unhappy with the outcome of an earlier interview with this reporter, declined to speak to Science for this story. In brief responses to written questions, he said his term so far has been “profoundly rewarding.”

One longtime colleague and friend, who has kept in touch with the director since he took the job, pleads for scientists—and reporters—to give him a chance. “I do worry that taking the stance that ‘Everything was perfect, and now comes Jay Bhattacharya and destroys everything’ is very problematic,” says Stanford physician-scientist John Ioannidis. “We need some shaking up and we need that to happen rigorously. If we don’t, it will be done with political means.”

New man on campus
NIH observers are still struggling to make sense of the agency’s 18th director, who jokes about being a Washington, D.C., outsider and buying suits for the first time since high school. In public remarks, he is relentlessly upbeat about his agency’s prospects. “I’m absolutely heartened by” bills in Congress that would keep NIH’s budget essentially level in 2026, he told an audience at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) in September.

In response to a survey this year of early-career physician-scientists that found 45% were thinking about leaving the United States, he maintained that “the future is bright.” If someone talks about leaving for Europe, Bhattacharya said, tell them “you’ll take a 60% pay cut and you won’t have a garbage disposal. It’s a depressing thing.”

They have IRB approval in Guinea-Bissau. Details are thin but presumably the trial is such that relative to current care this accelerates or leaves unchanged the vaccine schedule. This is sort of the point of colonialist medicine, as I see it. Exploit a power differential to do unethical science.

Why does every target trial emulation study have to include a bit that says "this shows how great target trial emulation is. RCTs are non-generalisable and expensive"? Imagine if every RCT said "this shows how great RCTs are. We did not have to rely on strong, untestable assumptions".

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort — specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick. Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.
