It’s hard to believe that Freyja, the first Icelandic foal born in Patagonia, is already 4 years old. That little tuft between her ears is exactly the same as it was the day she was born. Time moves quickly. Live slowly. Love deeply. Savor every moment.

The first 5 Icelandics born on our farm in Chilean Patagonia were fillies. Then came Skjoni. He’s a momma’s boy and a spitfire and an utter delight. For 9 months he has enjoyed his life with his harem of 7 ladies. But in spring he will need to be weaned to begin a new life with Ori & Baldur.

Chileans celebrate Fiestas Patrias at “fondas” where they eat empanadas , drink & dance the cueca. Fonda traditions vary from region to region. Here in the Azul Valley, Futaleufú for example, locals enjoy listening to the river, nibbling the first grass of spring, & taking siesta under the stars.

As a child, all-time Packer great, Willie Davis, lived next door. We had season tix to the County Stadium games & watched many woeful teams in bitter cold. When in Quito you must visit the house/ museum of Oswaldo Guayasamín (1919-1999): La Capilla del Hombre. One of the greatest of the golden generation of 20th century Latin American artists, writer’s & intellectuals. I almost met him through a mutual friend in ‘98, but he fell sick & died soon after.

I usually laugh at folks who post food pics, but when in Lima, Peru what are you going to do? Filet mignon kebabs w/ olive puree, huancaina & chimichurri glaze. Native potatoes & grilled Inca corn. Amazon ceviche w/ mango tiger’s milk & goldenberry. Don’t even get me started on the desert. Insane.

View from the Concon Sand Dunes in greater Valparaiso/Viña del Mar. Many come to watch the sunset, only to leave before dusk. The dusk is the best part! The 42 illuminated hills of Valpo come alive camera left. This never grows old. I am off today to Lima, Guayaquil, & Quito. Love life. See ya!

New pond #3 on our farm in Futaleufú, Chile. This one serves as a watering hole in “Peggy’s Meadow,” a small prairie where we graze our Icelandic stallions and our alpha male alpaca & llama: Little Willie & Dalai. I find myself hanging out here more often these days. Man cave, Patagonia style.

In 2001 I had the honor of being a houseguest for 4 days of Douglas Tompkins—the North Face founder who dedicated his later life to restoring land & donating national parks to Chile & Argentina. We shared a passion for Wendell Berry. Douglas & Wendell were friends. 2 enormous & consequential lives.

Since it’s bye week before our beloved Green Bay Packers kick off season #106 that means its time for the annual llamas vs alpacas intersquad game on our farm in Chilean Patagonia. Little Willie is QB for the “alpackers” this year. Yuki, a llama, volunteered to fill out their undersized lineup.

If you ask Eldfara, our spectacular 3-year old Icelandic mare, what she most loves about living in Chilean Patagonia she might mention the turquoise rivers, the jagged mountains, the glaciers, and the old growth forests. But she also loves the tradition of the afternoon siesta!

People ask me all the time: Do they understand you when you talk to them? What we forget is that, even amongst humans, the vast majority of communication is non-verbal. In short, “Yes. She gets me.” In fact, whenever I speak to her, she is all ears. 😀😂😍.

What I have learned from our Icelandic boss mare, Queen Sprenjia: The greatest gift we can give family, friends & loved ones is to be fully present for them. We don’t need to impress or dazzle them with intellect or win every argument. Love them for who they are. Not for who we want them to be.

After a lovely week with my mom, sister, & old friends in Wisconsin, we make a quick stop at the Robyn Temkin Memorial Gardens at Aurora Hospital in downtown Milwaukee. The garden commemorates my sister Robyn who passed away of malignant melanoma 45 years ago today. Now we head home to Patagonia.
