The gate of Bishamontang, Emissary Santo, Yamashina District, Kyoto City
Framed by a blazing canopy of Japanese maples (momiji), a steep stone pathway (chokushimichi) rises toward a dark wooden gate, its steps completely buried beneath a thick carpet of scarlet foliage. Slender bamboo handrails flank the stone stairs, leading the eye along a dramatic linear perspective toward the imperial messenger gate at the crest of the slope. Overhead, interlocking branches filter the light, casting a warm crimson glow over the damp stone and moss-covered embankments. The scene evokes an intimate sensory atmosphere: the crisp mountain air of a Kyoto morning, the faint scent of damp moss and aged cedar, the soft crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, and the profound, reverent hush of an ancient temple precinct.
Located at Bishamon-do Temple in the Yamashina District of Kyoto, this approach—known as the chokushimichi (Imperial Messenger Path)—is renowned for its late-autumn sando (shrine approach), where fallen leaves form an iconic momiji no jūtan (maple carpet). Originally founded in 703 AD by the monk Gyōki and re-established at its present site in 1665, Bishamon-dō is a distinguished monozeki temple (traditionally presided over by members of the imperial family or high nobility). The Chokushimon Gate at the top of the stairs was reserved for official imperial envoys, reflecting the sanctuary's esteemed lineage. The seamless integration of stone masonry, timber architecture, and natural forest contours reflects the supreme craft of Japanese zōen (landscape architecture) and monozukuri (artisanal mastery), designed to celebrate the subtle shifts of the seasonal calendar.

(2)This changes how we should understand feminists’ comparison of marriage to slavery. The analogy is usually read as a claim about domination. But the article argues that it was about commodification: not simply that women were ruled, but that they were treated as things to be bought and sold.

In 2021, Kevin Faccenda started walking the University of Hawai'i campus, collecting every grass species he could find. Right outside the botany building, he found one that had never been recorded in Hawai'i. He's been working on grass taxonomy ever since.
Text over a photograph reads: "Meet an identifier · Kevin Faccenda. 'If I can get some people to pay more attention to grasses because they know they can get ID help from me, then I'm accomplishing my goal of pulling the cloak of invisibility away from grasses.'" Below the text, a man in a blue button-down and backwards cap stands in a dense stand of golden grass that rises well above his head, with green forest behind. A small caption in the lower corner reads "Photo of Kevin by Jimmy Parker."Text on a cream grid background reads: "'Grasses are the most ecologically and culturally important family of plants in the world … truly the majority of the calories we eat come from cereal grasses including wheat, rice, maize, oats, barley, sorghum, millet, and rye; or livestock who were fed these. There is beauty in grass and I hope more people can come to recognize it.' — Kevin Faccenda, kevinfaccenda on iNaturalist." Small hand-drawn stars and sparkles sit around the text. At the bottom: "Read Kevin's story at inaturalist.org/blog."A four-photo grid titled "How to photograph a grass — advice from an expert identifier." Top left, a slender green grass flower cluster against a dark background, labeled "the full inflorescence of the grass." Top right, a macro of dry, straw-colored spikelets, labeled "a close-up of the flowers." Bottom left, a tuft of green and brown grass growing in leaf litter, labeled "the whole plant for size reference." Bottom right, a close-up of green blades emerging from dry stems, labeled "the place where the leaf diverges from the culm (aka 'stem')." At the bottom: "photos seen by kevinfaccenda on iNaturalist."

The first panel BEFORE ME shows a building labeled work, one labeled cafe, one labeled party, one labeled gym, as well as a house, a mountain with a campground, and an airplane flying above labeled travel.

MILD ME however only has a house and the work building.

MODERATE ME only has the house

SEVERE ME only has a bed

"nothing is real atoms never touch each other youve never touched anything in your life" ok. well when i pet my dog he is soft and when he licks my hand it is wet and that is far more real to me than whatevers going on at an atomic level

aropride replies:

what my atoms are doing is their fucking business man i'm busy trying to stop my dog from eating tissues directly out of the box

duckbunny replies:

nuclei don't touch, but the nucleus is not the core of reality. reality is made of electrons dancing. reality is made of bonds.

you pet your dog and the atoms that are you brush up against the atoms that are him, and the electrons that are you press into the electrons that are him, and both of them change their movement.

electrons of course are not really particles and do not really move.

you pet your dog and the electron-orbitals of your skin overlap with the electron-orbitals of his fur, and both are changed by the contact. you are not made of little motes floating alone in a void. you are a single unfathomable chord formed of a trillion vibrations, and so is he. and the note you play is changing at every moment by what you touch and how you breathe, and so is his. and atoms do not really have edges, and to touch is to interact, and when you put your hand on your dog the universe does not know that you are separate. the song expands to hold you both.

Believe Women is an epistemological stance. It doesn't mean you assume that every single woman is telling the truth and women never lie. It means you understand that in the system that we exist in, there's much more risk and pain for women coming forward about abuse than there is anything to gain.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.
