We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.

A photo I took of my cats making their way back home after killing a man.
I took this photo of my cat Ralph and his brother Shipley probably in 2015-16, behind the Magic House, which I wrote about in the final section of my book Ring The Hill. Shipley died in 2017. Ralph followed him in 2021, and his ashes were scattered in this exact spot.

So embarrassing when people think the point of reading a novel is to know the plot, so a summary is just as good. The plot isn’t important, you rube. You absolute simpleton. The point of reading a novel is to find out what the characters are eating and start thinking about what you want for dinner.

I think the sirens in the Odyssey sang the Odyssey, for there is nothing more seductive, more terrible, than the story of our own life, the one we do not want to hear and will do anything to listen to.

Also an important note for Canadian library goers: every winter the Canada Council for the Arts pays authors for having their books available in libraries through the Public Lending Right. For most CanLit folks these cheques are significantly more substantial than their annual royalties.
