When witches are cackling and telling you “Fire burn and cauldron bubble,” take a step back. Breathe. Those are normal things for fire and cauldrons to do. They’re trying to mess with you.

I'm basically a soothsayer. Comic from 2007 which was NOT 9 years ago turns out
Weedmaster P: Americans can't build a car that stays together or a shoe that costs less than ten thousand dollars but boy howdy we sure can build one hell of an internet huh Jeffrey: Yeah. Jeffrey: America invented the internet because they were afraid Russia would drop bombs on us from outer space. [[A bomb falls]] Weedmaster P: Maybe some hype shit will get made because of the global war on terrors Jeffrey: A vast computer network that believes in "evil", costs a billion dollars an hour and says the same 5 phrases over and over. {{Underneath}} Instead of showing you pictures of cats Internet 5.0 will question your patriotism

If all you have is a hammer (a wildly inflated sense of your own intellectual prowess) everything looks like a nail (a logic puzzle that everyone else was simply too stupid to solve)

Once again, “hallucination” happens at an insanely high rate and it is not solvable. How are we still having this conversation

The rhetoric has shifted once again, this time from "it's a tool" to "this is so obviously right you're delusional or a liar if you don't agree" so I will once again attempt to explain why AI is not, in fact, good for code

Idk if I can quite articulate the how and why but as someone who grew up in a religious cult, talking to people still in it and talking to fans of AI feels exactly the same

A thing making me quietly insane is how we’ve all for some reason decided to start pretending the hallucination problem has been solved when it very much has not

I think maybe the reason this didn't happen is that promises like the former are quickly verifiable as something it can't actually do, whereas promising to replace all labor *in the future* is a goalpost that's conveniently mobile. (Since, largely, the real customers are VCs etc, not people)

I agree with this, and yet: I am still waiting for an example of “when they actually work”. I promise I’m not being flippant! I keep investigating each claim I see and genuinely, I’ve yet to find one that improves on an existing solution

These are the kinds of takes that instill me with zero faith that liberals will ever be allies of the oppressed no matter how high the stakes get. They just want to go back to not thinking about it.

The "ICE is using military tactics suited for a warzone, not for American streets" rhetoric kinda misses the point that warzones are not naturally occuring. The US military creates war zones from residential neighborhoods and the tactics are not more justifiable just because it's overseas

the discourse on what jobs are acceptable to replace with generative AI reveals a lot about what we think of other people's jobs
recently my friend's comics professor told her that it's acceptable to use gen AI for script-writing but not for art, since a machine can't generate meaningful artistic work. meanwhile, my sister's screenwriting professor said that they can use gen AI for concept art and visualization, but that it won't be able to generate a script that's any good. and at my job, it seems like each department says that AI can be useful in every field except the one that they know best.

It's only ever the jobs we're unfamiliar with that we assume can be replaced with automation. The more attuned we are with certain processes, crafts, and occupations, the more we realize that gen AI will never be able to provide a suitable replacement. The case for its existence lies on our ignorance of the work and skill required to do everything we don't.

And if we don't take this leap, we go nowhere, sequestered, trapped in an illusion of comfort as we waste away, thinking we're keeping things the same as things fester within and our universe blinks out without us. And so.. "it’s time! Time to send our spark out into the darkness."

But the end of our universe is the birth of a new one. There's so much uncertainty, countless possibilities, but all we can do is set up the pieces, give her all the tools and support we can, and set things in motion. Eventually we'll be watching as this new universe evolves beyond our control.

The Way Things Have Been is our current universe: comfortable, we're used to it, but somethings not working. And if we don't move on, we'll be stuck in the same loop, delaying the inevitable, watching our current universe blink out around us as we scrape 22 more minutes to hold onto what feels safe.

The thing these people always crying about the homeless are mad about is a result of a very simple thing: there are people without homes. But the real issue is that they think not having a home for some time is an immutable characteristic of the person and not simply a current lack of a home. Giving them a home will solve your big problem which is noticing them existing within the temporary condition of not having a home.
