We studied the evolution of genome-wide linkage disequilibrium and its influence on genetic architecture with genetic drift. We found that the Bulmer effect is population size and demography dependent. For nerds: genetic architecture follows from solving PDEs.

How & why does the distribution of fitness effects #DFE vary among species? Meixi Lin, @klohmueller.bsky.social &co analyze genetic variation from 11 animal species, finding that fitness effects are influenced by phylogeny, population size, & organismal complexity @plosbiology.org 🧪 buff.ly/t5q7Mqo
Mutations are more deleterious in mammals compared to insects and birds. Left: The phylogenetic relationship among the (sub)species included in this study. Middle: The mean deleterious mutation effects (|s|mean) for 11 (sub)species, assuming a gamma-distributed DFE of neutral and deleterious mutations. From top to bottom, species are increasingly divergent from humans: mice, fin whales, vaquitas, arctic wolves, gray wolves, collared flycatchers, pied flycatchers, halictid bees, Drosophila and mosquitoes. Numbers show the ranks of |s|mean. Right: The shape parameter (alpha) of the gamma-distributed DFE for 11 (sub)species. Numbers show the ranks of alpha.

Reliance on haploid assemblies was a limitation. In the diploid assemblies we arrive at a similar insertion rate, lending confidence. Oddly, representation of elements is biased in one genome (the Tasha/Boxer canfam6 assembly), which has been previously reported.
