Everyone: “You will die riding your bike to work in Boston.” So I asked a patient of mine who worked at a Center for Risk Analysis. Answer: “conservatively, you might be DOUBLING your risk of dying on your commute… …from 1 in 10,000 to 2 in 10,000.” Me: EASY choice to keep riding my bike.

📈 Patients with a larger initial #ZDrug supply were more likely to continue filling these medications over time, indicating that initial prescribing decisions may have lasting implications for long-term use. ja.ma/4xeLO8W
Three line graphs show Z-drug usage trends over 7 years. A: Annual share with a Z-drug fill. B: Annual share with ≥180-d supply. C: Annual mean supply. All graphs show decreasing values over time, with groups having higher initial supply consistently starting and remaining higher.

This may be my "favorite" result from the study. Despite multiplex respiratory point-of-care testing changing WHICH patients got antibiotics -- in the testing arm, patients with an identified virus were less likely to get abx -- there was no difference in improvement in symptom severity.

Science is a container ship carrying 200,000 tons of observations. The weight comes from years of hard work mining and refining these observations. The ship can’t turn on a dime, so scientific knowledge often changes slowly. And I think the public’s expectations don’t always match this truth.
