The fiscal year is over. The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years. Source: grantwitness.org/nsf/analyses...
The graph shows the cumulative number of awards made by month across this fiscal year, as compared to the last 6 fiscal years. The line for this year is total flat until June, but then finally gets up to 91 by October. In prior years the increase starts building earlier and ends on average in the 700-800 range (with variability, last year was only between 400-500).

The 2022 Swedish election was a famous cliff-hanger, decided by just 0.7%. With over 50% of districts reporting tonight, Swedish Television prognosis predicts that the 2026 Swedish election, with over 8 million votes cast, could be decided by as few as 20,000 votes. Or 0.2%.

This weekend the Swedes will vote for a new parliament. The center-left opposition block has been leading but it will be tight. If the right block wins, the far-right SD’s strategy will pay off and they will (formally) enter government for the first time in history.

Figure 2: Survey responses: AI vs. human review comparisons, The figure is a horizontal bar chart with a marked 0 line, and bars to the left indicated human preferred and bars to the right indicating AI preferred, on a continuous scale from -0.6 to 0.6. The figure shows the differences in the mean response score between AI and human reviews for each of the nine review-quality criteria. In six out
of nine criteria, AI reviews were rated higher than human reviews. The preference towards AI reviews was stronger for authors than for PC, SPC, and ACs. All p-values show strong statistical significance at the α = 0.01 level.

Update here. This was passed because two MPs in the far right Swedish Democrats ignored parliamentary pairing praxis (where opposing MPs sit out votes to keep the math fair when other parties are absent). SD brought in two additional MPs instead of abstaining to gain the votes to reject the bill.

The Swedish Parliament rejected transitionary rules for citizenship applications. This is a devastating decision for thousands of people who have waited 24+ months for their citizenship to be processed. A horrible precedent that stains Sweden's reputation as a country with a strong rule of law.

This figure is the one that is actually embarrassing for sociology:
Fig. 2: Data and code availability by field. Left, data and code availability as a percentage of papers. Right, the raw counts of papers with data and code available and not available. Restricted data (purple) did not count as available data, but might be accessible in principle.

This shows political science has thee most papers with open data/code, followed by economics, then much further behind, psychology and then sociology (sad). Sociology is well below all field average.

The social media ban that wasn’t — Crooked Timber
The Australian government’s legislation seeking to ban access to social media for people under 16 has received plenty of attention in International media, mostly leading with the government’s that 4.7 million accounts were banned or deactivated when the legislation came into effect. Rather less attention has been paid to discussion of the outcome within Australia, where the consensus is that there has been very little effect for most. With most kids still active, the minority who have been caught by the ban have suffered feelings of ostracism and exclusion When discussing the issue on my own social media (which had few if any teenage readers to begin with) I’ve only had one parent report their kids being thrown off.

Just learned about this study looking at methodological trends in psych and econ over time: online.ucpress.edu/collabra/art.... Matches my perception well: Nobody in psych bothers to (explicitly) try causal inference unless they conducted an experiment, not a lot of theoretical work either.
Figure 1 from the paper.
Econ: from 2008 to 2024, methods aiming for causal inference have increased, theoretical work has decreased.
Psych: Mostly experimental or descriptive correlational work.
