One of my favorite rhetorical and analytical moves is joining things (showing that different, seemingly unrelated ideas are part of the same phenomenon) and taking them apart (resolving paradoxes by demonstrating that what appears like a contradictory thing is different things, lumped together). 1/

The investment firm TPG has bought Optum UK, the healthcare technology business behind the electronic patient record system used by most GP practices in England, in a deal worth about $400m (£300m). Now it can be revealed that Kirstie Donnelly, the City & Guilds chief executive who later received a £1.74 million bonus, and Abid Ismail, chief financial officer, who received £1.2 million, provided suspect information about the financial health of the charity shortly before the sale.

1. "Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing.
Speech is the secondary or overlaid function.
Breathing must be fulfilled before speech occurs.
2. Drowning people's mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people's mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water.
3. Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water's surface.
Pressing down on the surface of the water permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe.
4. Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment.
5. From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people's bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs."

Some news - you can read it all in the alt text www.gailmyerscough.co.uk
I've got some frustrating news to share, and I wanted to tell you directly rather than let you find out when an order doesn't go through.

From today, I'm no longer able to take orders from EU countries or Northern Ireland. I'm really sorry if that affects you.

It's not a decision I've taken lightly. Selling to the EU since Brexit has got progressively harder and more expensive. There are new customs charges starting in July 2026, a product safety regulation that requires me to appoint an EU-based representative for every item I sell into Europe, VAT rules that need specialist handling, and incoming requirements around how returns are managed online.

Each one on its own is barely manageable. All of them together, for a one-person studio, is not.

I've watched other small creative businesses quietly stop selling to Europe over the last few years. I held on as long as I could. The regulations taking effect this year are the ones that have finally made it unworkable for me.

Northern Ireland deserves a mention because the situation is, quite frankly, embarrassing. It's part of the UK. And yet post-Brexit trading arrangements mean that sending a parcel there from Manchester is as complicated as sending one to Germany. I doubt small creative businesses, or the customers buying from them, were particularly high on anyone's agenda when those decisions were made.

I haven't permanently given up on reaching EU and Northern Ireland customers. If the regulatory landscape changes, or if I find a practical way to make it work without passing ridiculous costs on to you, I'll be back.

In the meantime, if you're based in the EU or Northern Ireland and you've been a customer, thank you.

Gail x

If you're in the UK, please keep supporting small independent businesses. We need you more than ever right now.

Some worrying figures here www.thetimes.com/article/d758...
But in the 2lst century, the creative industries have re-privileged, a return to the pre-war status quo. The closing of access today starts not with unpaid internships or university courses, but at school. Over the past 20 years, arts education has been downgraded in the state sector; in 2023, 41 per cent of state schools did not have any students sitting drama GCSEs, and 42 per cent had none doing music GCSEs, according to the Cultural Learning Alliance.
University applications now reflect this prioritisation. At four top universities — Oxford, Cambridge, King's College London and Bath - more than 50 per cent of students studying creative degrees come from upper middle-class households; for working-class students, the take-up is as low as 4-5 per cent, according to the Sutton Trust, a social mobility charity.

Always love to be reminded of this. A lot of it was hand-stitched too. Really amazing, precise work. Women’s work is so often minimised and forgotten.
Screenshot:

ALSO, it's not just little old ladies sewed the first spacesuits," it's "the women from the Playtex Corp were the only ones who could sew within the tolerances needed." Yes, THAT Playtex Corp, the one who makes bras.
Bra-makers sent us to the moon.
And the cool thing with them was that they did it all WITHOUT PINS, WITHOUT SEAM RIPPING and in ONE TRY. You couldn't use pins or re-sew seams because the spacesuits had to be airtight, so any additional holes in them were NO GOOD. They were also sewing to some STUPID tight tolerances-in our costume shop if you're within an eighth of an inch of being on the line, you're usually good. The Playtex ladies were working on tolerances of 1/32nd of an inch. 1/32nd. AND IN 21 LAYERS OF FABRIC.

Pretty terrible that heavily-indebted Sotheby's has donated to Reform UK. Via Private Eye

**AFFORDABILITY CHEQUE**

**Last August Reform UK's coffers were boosted by a generous £100,000 donation from the UK franchise of Sotheby's International Realty.**

It isn't hard to see why the property agency, whose UK and Dubai franchises are owned by businessman George Azar, would be interested in supporting Reform. Not only is it the estate agent used by the party's treasurer, Nick Candy, but Reform is hoping its planned tax exemption for multimillionaires prompts wealthy people to relocate to the UK, which would boost the luxury property market Sotheby's deals in.

Less clear, however, is how Sotheby's was able to afford its donation to Reform. Its accounts for 2023 show the company was heavily in debt, with net liabilities of more than £12.8m. The company's accounts for 2024, which might have shed some light on the matter, were due by 31 December 2025. But, more than three months on, they still haven't been filed, which is a criminal offence under the Companies Act.

Alas, whether Sotheby's had made sufficient profit from its UK operations to fund its generous gift remains, for the time being, a mystery.
