It's even worse than this, as they don't then do the self-styled 'pragmatism' right. The argument is you can do another wave of fossil fuel development - be it drilling or runways - and still reach net zero, but they won't put proper legal guardrails in place or invest properly in carbon removals.

George Square
by Jackie Kay

My seventy-seven-year-old father
put his reading glasses on
to help my mother do the buttons
on the back of her dress.
‘What a pair the two of us are!’
my mother said, ‘Me with my sore wrist,
you with your bad eyes, your soft thumbs!’

And off they went, my two parents
to march against the war in Iraq,
him with his plastic hips, her with her arthritis
to congregate at George Square where the banners
waved at each other like old friends, flapping,
where they’d met for so many marches over their years,
for peace on earth, for pity’s sake, for peace, for peace.

The text of my complaint 👇
The presenter, Jonathan Ford, claimed that the government does not "keep an official running total of system costs". Claire Coutinho then repeats the same claim. If you google "beis electricity system costs" or "desnz electricity system costs" you will find in the first few results the "Electricity Generation Costs" reports. The 2020 edition published by BEIS would have been the most recent edition available to Ms Coutinho when she became Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero in August 2023. On page 41 you will find section 7, "Wider system costs" which sets out, quantitatively, "the calculation method and main caveats of wider system impacts" of different types of electricity generator which "account for different wider system impacts between technologies due to differences in the timing of their generation, their location and other characteristics". The results of the analysis are on pages 45 and 46. The analysis was updated later in 2023 and again in 2025. How did Mr Ford fail to find these documents which are so easy to find with a simple web search? Why was Ms Coutinho allowed to make the same claim which is so obviously not true? Please can the programme be withdrawn from BBC Sounds until it is re-edited to correct these basic mistakes.

The UK now needs to introduce political spending limits across a parliament, not just for election campaign years. Otherwise, its election spending rules could fall over. Current rules: parties have a limit (about £34m) for 12 months before an election - but no limits outside the 12 month period.
