Not geography but I will never get over sitting next to a guy in the dining hall freshman year at an elite university bragging about how he kept kosher as he chowed down on bacon. But you're eating bacon, I said. "Bacon isn't pork," he said. That was 41 years ago and I hear it like it was yesterday.

Tolkien gave up on writing a sequel to the Lord of the Rings because he imagined the youth of Gondor forming 'orc-cults' who would imitate Mordor and found it too depressing; a remarkable feat of imagination when it came to predicting people who still worship the Soviet or Nazi empires today.

This is a British/American difference. British universities have fewer people called 'Professor'. (Their lower ranks are readers and lecturers.) When I had to fill out some paperwork at the Bodleian when I was an assistant professor, I listed my title as 'Prof.' and they talked me out of it

NEW YORKER CAPTION CONTEST

IMAGE: two people in lab coats stand next to an enclosure with four monkeys in it—the monkeys are dressed as a barbershop quarter, singing. The enclosure window makes it look kind of like a painting.

MY CAPTION: “Welcome to The Lab. Never interact with the haunted monkey painting. They used to be a trio, and I used to have an assistant.”
